View Full Version : Audio Sync Issues when Media Managing HD files

Curious to see if anyone else ran into this problem besides me...

I used the media manager to convert some DVCPROHD 720p24(23.98) files into the DV NTSC 23.98 48kHz setting. When I open the DV files, they eventually go out of sync, even though that it doesn't happen with the HD movie files. Feels like it's the audio drift associated with running the picture at 24fps and the sound at 29.97... but there was no conversion involved - or should have been. I have a workaround, but it's just a pain in the arse.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm running FCP 5.0.4 on 10.3.9

Well, I did some more investigating, and I think I'm witnessing an odd bug. I've been shooting some interviews at 720 24pN and importing into FCP 5.0.4 just fine. I'm cutting with SD footage, and since it's going to be displayed/distributed on SD anyway, I decided to downconvert the 720 24pN material in FCP because you can't edit multiple resolutions on a single timeline in FCP. (I hope they fix that in 6) Anyway, after I downrezzed using media manager, the longer clips drifted WAY out of sync at the end of the longer clips (like ten minutes). Then I tried exporting them, same thing happens.

Now here's the thing, I dragged one of the 10 min HD .mov files into Cleaner to convert them into a dv file and the audio still drifts out. So I open the original HD .mov in Quicktime and the audio drifts out - drag the same file into FCP and it plays perfectly fine and in sync throughout. It seems that QT is the culprit behind the audio sync issues.

So far, I've tested on OSX 10.3.9 and 10.4.4 with QT version 7.0.1 through 7.0.4 and the results are still the same. I was wondering if anyone can test with any of their own longer clips and see if they are getting the same results as I am.
