When you guys do work in AE, do you import your final edit from your NLE and work from there in a comp or do you do make seperate comps for each scene or shot, then once you have done the cc or whatever to the scene or shot how do you get it back into preimere?? I hope that isn't to confusing to answer

There is a plug-in called Automatci Duck that will bring over your timeline from your NLE and put it into After Effects. If you're using the latest version of Adobe Production Suite, you can export from Premiere into AE, and the changes will update in Premiere. Forgot what it's called though.
I use FCP, and I don't have Automatic Duck, so I just export everything as 10-bit Uncompressed. I usually do my comp in AE, then render out a proxy for the edit, then bring over the rest of the timeline into AE, then nest my comps into them where needed. Try to avoid useless renders.
1,I usually make a rough cut in Premiere, then I export the sequence I want to modify in AE as tga files or as uncompressed movie, I change them in AE, then I rerender it, and back too premiere.
2, I copy-paste the sequence from premiere to AE, then I render as uncompressed, and back to premiere
3, I import the captured footage to AE, change it and render it to premiere.
and I make a lot of comps

I export only the frames that need altered, do what needs done in AE, and render out lossless and put back in. Just don't render them out from your NLE with any effects on or they'll get a double whammy.
oneinfiniteloop, I have been wanting to begin using proxies for a while now, but I have a hard time getting info on it. Maybe you could do a tutorial of your way? Seems very effeciant.

I basically do quick render's of lower res footage to put in the NLE to see how it fits in the edit. I'll have to check my settings and post them when I get a chance.

I use the same workflow as Surf and Rapier.

I prefer AE not only as a comp tool, but as my finishing suite as well. FCP doesn't have a decent enough CC in it for my tastes, so that is why I will use the proxies in my edit, then render out the timeline in chunks as uncompressed. All my VFX shots have already been rendered out and I can nest those comp's into my final composition that I use for CC and finishing.

Ahh. that makes a crapload of sense. I thought you might be referring to Avid's ability to use Quicktime refernce files, but in an AE kind of way.
I never even thought about doing it low res for speed and then swappin out. That's a hell of a timesaver. thanks

Also, if you are working with HVX200 footage, if you are using the Raylight plugin, then you can switch between a low-res proxy and the full quality clip with a push of the button inside of AE. No extra renders required.
