I have checked your website for a few weeks (unfortunatelly now:New Site Coming Soon.....). so I do not really understand the workflow in Hollywood. what does previz work mean? what does it use for? do you rebuild a scene for the final CG effects, or you just reshade lighten and render it?

ps: I loved the video RnD :nads:

I'm gonna beat Rich to part of your question: Previz is short for "Pre-Visualization" and it's the process of building a scene simply in 3D before major production begins to visualize hwo it will look beforehand. - It's basically a 3D storyboard/setdesign/blocking all rolled into one.

Yeah like in the King kong behind the scenes. Peter Jackson had a mini DVD player with the scenes worked out with 3D charactors performing in a mock up set that loosely matched the real set. He would sit with the actors and show them this to give them an idea of what he has in mind.

Yep, they usually previz the whole thing. Saves tons of money and time, from what I've read in Cinefex. Go pick up a copy, they talk extensively about previz in just about all the interviews. Plus, it's a great mag.

like others have said...

we create a 3d animated version of a live action film, well in advance of principle photography...

this allows the production to work out ideas early on in preproduction...what we do then is distributed the previs to all the departments...where they can start to break it down and figure out how to do it in real life...generally...we previs the stuff that is hard to do and difficult to figure out without seeing "something"...

I think you bluild the scenes in 3D. after the previz, do you continue the buliding of the semi-ready scenes to high detailed scenes?

no. i sometimes we hand off our 3d scenes to effects houses like ILM or tippet.

but, most of the 3d models that we use for previs are of set pieces or props or locations or pirate ships....they are not cg or will never be cg...they are used to inform the production about how to best do a specific shot or sequence in the location/set that they will build in real life.

Previs and CGI are different entities that do completly different things for a movie.
