Firewire Compatibility

I've started editing a project in FCP at the local film forum. However, their HDD space is limited and I still have more footage to capture. Thus I'm planning on getting my own external FireWire HDD, but as someone who's not very familiar with MAC hardware I was was wondering, will any old third party Firewire HDD work with a MAC, or do I have to buy one from Apple directly?

Any FW drive will work. Make sure you format it for MacOS Extended.
