How can I reproduce this storyboard as a template?

Can anyone tell me how to reproduce this as a template, via layers, so that I can insert images behind the black frame such that everything outside the frame becomes slightly opaque?

Obviously I am totally new to Photoshop and still feeling pretty lost.

I've spent hours fiddling with this and I just can't figure it out.

Look at it in Photoshop, and look at the opacity for the Dim Layer.

Hi Rapier-

This may just be 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of another, but I think I would prefer the image outside the border to be faded, instead of masked/darkened.

The template I am trying to recreate shows the checkered background at two different levels of opacity, but I couldn't figure out how to set two different levels for the checkerboard background, one inside and the other outside the black frame.

I think this picture might show what I am trying to achieve a little better:

Ahh, I get it. CHeck the link again. You would be wanting Layer Masks. Now, when you put an image into the main window of the second layer (not the layer Mask window of that layer) the layer mask will do what you are wanting. The top layer is the boarder only.

Oh man....I'm really belaying my ignorance here, aren't I.
I have been bringing in the storyboard .jpg files just by using "open" and then dragging them over to the template window. This automatically creates "Layer 2" for the new .jpg, and the opacity still does not change outside the frame.

Can you tell what I am doing wrong?
