I've been using a tv as a monitor for ages. Now one day I start up FCP and the screen doesn't kick in....

I go into my preferences and it says (missing).

Okay....I restart.

Same thing.

I try to change every display setting in the prefs and .....no luck.

Finally i switch it from (missing) to "none".

It swtches and then is stuck there. I click on the drop down menu and there is NOTHING there any more.

Any ideas?

I've had the same problem with my monitor. Sometimes FCP just gets these weird glitches where the connection won't read or just the audio wont read. Try unplugging the connection both while FCP is running and while it isn't. Usually works for me. If that doesnt work and your project is simple, copy it and start a new project, then paste it in; that's also worked.

Still no luck....fucking pissing me off!!!!!

I've gone into every menu and every tab.

This is so annoying.

also when I launch. I no longer get the warning that there is no deck attached.

WTF?

i know what it is. but i'm not going to tell you.

(actually, i'm starting up FCP so i can tell you what menu to look under)

just a sec...

EDIT:

okay, try this...

under the VIEW menu > EXTERNAL VIDEO > make sure ALL FRAMES is checked. its probably set to OFF.

I have the same problem at school when Im using a deck to preview on a TV. Just jiggle the cord or unplug and plug in while running FCP, you just have to get the hardware to say "hey FCP notice me!!!!"

Did you just upgrade to OSX Tiger? When I did it threw off the settings and I had to do a quicktime download. Especially if you are running your monitor through your camera.
Check my thread...FCP not recognizing my camera in this section for the link.
Maybe?

Naw, stayed away from tiger cause of all the horror stories I've heard.

I'm running the monitor straight from my powerbook's svideo out.

Is there a way to reset the port?

I'm so stuck cause the monitor signal is there for everyother app except FCP....

I have found that if you go int VIEW>refresh A/V devices it will unghost the External video options and allow you to check ALL FRAMES.

Tried it. No luck. Reinstalled. Installed update. Still no luck.

Filled with a tremendous rage.

It may not be a FCP problem if you are going s-video out it may be your
monitor pref.

Do you get an image on to your monitor when your not in FCP? Like your desktop?

Yeah, there is a signal. I can drag stuff over and see it. It is recognised by other applications.

any ideas?

Have you trashed your prefs?

Sometimes the prefs get corrupted and cause FCP to act strangely. (This is the solution to about 90% of my FCP problems that I have - no idea why it works)

Anyway you have to go to your user Library>Preferences
Delete the com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist file
goto the Final Cut Pro User Data folder in the same folder
Delete the Final Cut Pro 5 Preferences file and the Final Cut Pro POA Cache file

Restart FCP, and you'll know it works if it asks you to do Easy Setup when it starts. Once it is up and running fine, empty the trash can.

Keep in mind this will reset everything to default and delete your favorites - like all the look settings for MB Editors if you have that. If you want to keep the favorites, open FCP before trashing the prefs, make a new project, and drag your favorites into the new project. Save the project, re-open it after trashing the prefs, and then drag your favorites back into the favorites folder of FCP.

Try and see if that works.

I really wish that worked.

Thanks for the idea. I appreciate it.

Anyone else?
