Ive been a member of this site for quite a while, and I have followed 35mm adapter technologies and shallow depth of field adapter technologies almost since their beginnings. So, I was just wondering where do you see these technologies going? When do you think it will be obsolete..if it ever will be? What new technologies will help in the perfecting in these adapters? This thread is just meant to be a discussion...both for hypothetical situations and for discussions of any sort involving the advancements of sed technology.

adapters will be obsolete when digital 35mm cameras are under $5,000. end of story

Probably true. If you could get something like the HVX with higher dynamic range, a larger imaging sensor, and the ability to use prime lenses you'd be well on your way to putting an end to our 35mm adapters.
For the moment, I don't think the 35mm adapter movement is going anywhere but onward. The craze for these things (which I myself am swept up in) is just amazing. I've never seen anything like it. So many people competing for that perfect adaptor. There is fierce competition (ahem...Nikon D scree anyone) but there is also a great spirit of cooperation. I'd give the adapter scene at least a few more good years. I don't see anything coming down the pipe (not even RED) that would absolutely displace the idea of making a 35mm adapter.

hm, depending on how big the RED sensor will be, it could produce a decent DoF to satisfy a DPs needs...

If they keep their promise and make that sensor 35mm I think it could produce a really short DOF. That's the real thing. No need for an adapter. :)

I agree, but I guess my comments were aimed more at the lower level indy market. There will always be those of us who do not have the budget to get the RED or other possible solutions out there that will rely on do-it-yourself methods like the 35mm adapters. Or at least there will be for quite some time.

Agreed $$$ will be the driving factor. This is a good thing is it will drive the DIY crowd to be more inventive. You could make a Beta,DVCpro,HD,P2,RED,MiniDv,35mm to 16 to super 8mm adapter,Reel to Reel true analog dolby surround 360 sound camera...but if you out price your market.

I personally think it will be around for for quite some time. Even after all these items are stock on a new camera, there will always be someone outhere who will want to do things the "old school" way to capture the essence and effect that a homebuilt adapter and an old camera produces for their project.

k guys.. the red camera is on hiatus.. its not gunna be coming out any time soon.
jim jannard is busy with his fortune 500 company (oakley).. but he continues to work on the project.. when it will be coming out?? (who knows).. it will definatly not be an indi budget camera though.
sucks:(
but hey.. does anyone have that link to that guy who hacked his camera so that he could attach lenses directly?
since dvx prices have come down so much.. im thinking of buying another one to try this.. or maybe buy a broken one first to try it out..
