I was hired to do an electronic press kit. I am going to shoot it in 24pa. There are clips of a music video that I must take off a dvd that was shot on film. My first thought was to attempt to convert the 29.97 dvd back to 24p so that it matches my project.

I tried converting it by bringing in the mpeg off the dvd into after effects then outputting it to 24p avi. That was a disaster.

So my question... if I want to work in 24pa for the whole project how do I convert the dvd footage to 24pa.

Also ... should I make it easy on myself and shoot in 24p instead of 24pa. Then my footage and the dvd would all be 29.97 from the start.

I would just shoot everything 24p and edit it all in a 29.97 timeline. I've actually done several tests, shooting 24p and 24p advanced, and edited the footage in a 29.97 timeline, and it's very hard to see the difference.

If you have to convert 29.97 footage to 24p, I have found that the Magic Bullet suite works the best. But After Effects will be rendering forever. Probably close to 2 hours for 2 minutes of footage.

Remember that even a 24p dvd will have the pulldown added on playback, so so it will look the same as a 29.97 dvd when viewed on a television.

If you're going to edit in 29.97 then shoot 24p (not 24pa) 24pa will cause stuttering, especially for fast action.
DVD- Is this someones footage that you can get the original of or have access to the original film? If so they could telecine it at 24fps or remove pulldown depending on the source.
Problem with going 29.97 to 24fps is you have to do a pulldown removal in AE and place it in a 24fps comp. But since there are edits it's unlikely to have the same cadence throughout. (i.e. 24fps conversion will be off) If you must edit and mix 29.97 footage then shoot 24p and edit 29.97
