if I purchase this setup:
MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo 2GHz + LaCie Little Big Disk 200GB
will I be ok to run 720 60p DVCPRO HD on Final Cut Studio with the LaCie set as the scratch disk connected via FW400? sustained speed with the 7200rpm LaCie is 40MB/s. that's more than enough since DVCPRO HD is only 100Mb/s right? P2 download from camera via USB 2.0 and I'm all set right? the LaCie is said to be FW bus powered, think this will be true with a laptop running on battery?

I don't believe the universal binary (Intel compatible) version has been released, as yet. So as of now, I don't believe FC Studio will run on the Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro's. You may have to wait until the end of March or April for the cross-grade (check the Apple site).

got it on the FCP studio release, my question is more about the LaCie disk sustaining DVCPRO HD over FW400.

The new laptop only has one firewire port, so you will not be able to connect any external hard drive as you transfer the footage off the P2 card in the camera.
Kind of sucks, since the new laptop doesnt have a PCMIA port neither. Leaving you with only the ablility to transfer P2 footage onto the laptops internal hard drive, than connect a Lacie later, for editing.
you can use a usb2 external drive, no?

Transfer the P2 clips via usb through the laptop to your external hard drive via firewire. Your solution will work just fine. And yes, this computer and that hard drive will be more than enough to work with 720p footage without dropping frames.

I've read the posts on streaming to the G4 but I believe they were using the Firewire 800 port. The port Apple took away on the MacBookPro. I'm not clear on about being able to stream using the Firewire400 port.
So does this mean I could use the internal drive (assuming I have the 7200 rpm 100gig drive) for streaming via the Firewire 400 port ? Then I could use the USB and/or the Firewire400 for exporting/backing up video stored on the internal drive?

Firewire 400 should provide more than enough bandwidth for DVCPROHD in a "capture now" setting. Just make sure you've got ample room on your hard drive and that it's not fragmented. I did a lot of work with Varicam footage on an older Powerbook G4 using FW400 and it worked without a hitch. I don't wager you'll have any difficulties with the HVX on one of the Core Duo models.

Nobody's streaming to FW800; the camera doesn't have an FW800 port, it only has an FW400 port.
As far as whether you'll succeed in streaming to the internal drive; Robert Lane on DVInfo has gone through and tested various configurations on a G4, and he strongly recommends using an external drive on a separate firewire bus. Don't know if that'll apply to the MacBook or not, of course, but it does seem like solid advice.
