can someone help me with this?
i shot overcranked clips at what i believe to be the correct settings last night for a music vid, but am unable to play them back and see them in slow motion when viewing the thumbnails or dubbing to mini dv.

my settings were:

720/24p
60 frames
capturing to P2

does the slow motion effect have to be acheived in post?

i did this to avoid shooting 24pn (which i know allows you to view the clips in slow motion immediately), in order to avoid the advanced 2:3:3:2 pulldown. this was a multi-camera shoot with 3 DVX's shooting at 24p. if i had shot the 24pn, would this have led to problems in post with the DVX footage?

thanks.

ps when i look at the clips in the thumnail view, it reads as 720/60p at the bottom? so i couldn't dub them to tape as 720/24p footage...

There is no 2:3:3:2 pulldown in 720p.

For the simplest workflow you should have shot in 24pN.

If you're editing in FCP, I believe you can use cinema tools to conform your 720/24p clips into the equivalent of 24pN, which will give you the overcranking slow-mo you're wanting.

thanks barry.

i must have been mixed up... on page 86 of the manual, i read that 'to perform the pulldown setting when dubbing 720/24pn...' '2) select DUBBING SETUP and the PULLDOWN SEL... ...24pn: 2:3:3:2 pulldown'

what am i not understanding correctly?

next question: does using cinema tools to acheive the effect create a loss in the quality of the slow motion as compared to having shot in 24pn?

ps my other question is - would shooting at 24pN and editing with clips shot in 24p have created issues in post given my assumptions about dubbing as noted in the above post?

any clarification on this one by anyone is much appreciated.

My camera's not in front of me right now, but as I recall you can choose either pulldown method when dubbing to tape.

Secondly, why not just edit on a 24p timeline? You should be shooting 24PA on the DVXs, and 24pN on the HVX, and edit it all on a 24p timeline and all your hassles will go away...

Moving forward with any multi-cam DVX/HVX shoots that's definitely the route I'll suggest, and you are right Barry. You have the option to pulldown at 24p or 24pA. Won't make that mistake again.

In the short term, I'll just try and navigate the cinema tools route to remedy the problem and slow down the footage.
