It'll be good once there's a more solid definition of Hero. While I think SuperHero films will be a blast, I'd like to see this more open for heros in general ... more about the selfless act of heroism, or characters who have at least done that & are called a hero in their "world" in the film, though they may not be in any form of what we'd think is a hero at the time.

General question about the contests: what about foreign (= not english) language?

Gary the Llama
02-27-2006, 07:56 AM
The first short script I ever wrote was about a superhero so this is perfect. Unfortuantely, that script was 12 pages long. :(

But my camera will be here tomorrow! :)

Marcus, I've done two shorts for the fest in spanish with subtitles, there's no problem.

Okay... I just fixed the problems with my script. This one is going to be awesome!

PLEASE let us make posters that we can show off before the films are released/voting begins. Maybe 2 or 3 weeks before the voting we all get to show off posters?

I have the perfect poster for mine... :-D

Hello All. Total noobi, here. I purchased a DVX100B in January, and I have been very busy learning how to use it. Anyways, I would love to make an entry for the Hero-Fest, but I have a question. I have been watching all of the entries in the Sci-Fest, and I was wondering if all of the music is original, or some of the music is from somewhere in the public domain? Also, if some of it is from the public domain, where are people getting it from?

WilderWorks
02-28-2006, 08:18 PM
I think a good deal of the music was original, or permission was given by the creators. There is a program that allows you to assemble rather generic soundtracks, but the name currently escapes me. Someone will certainly come along and fill in the blank. But again, I know a lot of discussion was given to seeking composers and getting music.

Most of it is original. By that I mean some of them wrote it themselves, some of them got a friend to do it, and some of them got Chris Hurn to do it. A few got permission to use licensed music (a blues song here, a bit of symphony there), but I can't think of many. I actually didn't see any public domain stuff in SciFest.

Oh, and Soundtrack for OSX is not that bad if you're just looking for something quick and easy. I used it on a cheap commercial I did recently, and it didn't suck at all. But watch out for Freeplay and the like, they're only 'free' in certain cases, and they've gotten more restrictive lately. I'd stick with Soundtrack if you're looking for that kinda stuff (generic but useable).

If you need help with scoring (or finding someone to score it), look around the board. If you shoot it, they will come.

what percentage of people write their own soundtracks for their films? I've only been using the music off of Final Cut Express. I need to think of a great intro like "The Greatest American Hero".

Brandon Rice

A lot of people do their own scores, or have someone else score their film. I know there is a forum for composers. And, some composers frequent this site as well, Chris Hurn, and Chris Rojas come to mind. They both did great jobs with some of the sci-fest shorts.

A midi keyboard and garageband = original soundtracks. A little musical talent would help too.....but it's never stopped me...... although maybe it should.

I'm gonna cross post this in the other two or three threads about this since there seems to be no clear official word and there's no official thread or sticky :)

I was gonna do something like "A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE"

Please don't ask us, it's up to YOU to decide. Really. Don't ask me to get geekier than I already am. The term "hero" is thrown around a lot today, so you might want to put the bar a little higher lest you include the really helpful lady at your vet--or at least put a cape on her. :)
Based on this defintition I took was developing something about a man who was seen as a hero in his community and then does something that might seem heroic on some level but turns out to just be graphic and awful and at the opposite end of the human spectrum - animalistic anc base and violent an primal

because THIS mod (Barry) in THIS definition left it open to MORTALS with heroic qualities ... in other words someone that commits or is capable of committing an act of heroism!

Now somehow Jarred seems to have made it just SUPER hero's b uy nature of calling it SUPER hero in another thread after Barry's.

Glad it's not two weeks before the contest. I'm also only 65% as interested now.

But maybe Jarred was just being loose with his language when he typed SUPER hero after Barry had just typed hero, and excluded jantors for going to work everyday and commuting 90 minutes each way, but including tellers that stop a bank robbery, a dad that throws him or herself in front of a bullet to save his kid, etc.

I, hope it's left to the more broad definition that may include extrordinary mortals/and or movies that deal thematically with what it is / means to be a hero.
