I never understood that saying. I look forward to seeing your film!

from: http://www.inlikeflynn.com/
The phrase "In like Flynn" originated as a coarse reference to Errol Flynn's powers as a seducer. In November, 1942, Flynn was charged with statutory rape, arrested and brought to trial, then acquitted. He was charged with having sexual intercourse with two girls under the age of 18. (He was 33 at the time). It was Flynn's belief that the Los Angeles district attorney had made him a scapegoat for Hollywood in order to discipline the film community. Jerry Giesler (Flynn's ace lawyer) considered Flynn an excellent witness and thought that his "gentlemanly demeanor throughout the trial had been an important factor". A new phrase was added to the English language: "In like Flynn".

Interesting. I've heard people say "In like flint" before too. I guess that comes from gravel being brought out and having pieces of flint mixed in with it. I still don't understand "In like Flynn". I mean, Errol Flynn just isn't a part of my influence and I can't relate to the saying. Maybe "In like Rob Lowe" would make more sense to me.

I always thought it was sexual... "Inside like Flynn"...

Just like "in there like swimwear"... which (I think) refers to the weggies that females get when they go swimming in there revealing swimwear. =B Sometimes guys. ROFL

Actually, I think THAT term came to life with the James Coburn movie:

can't be. It first appeared in print in 1946, 21 years before In Like Flynt, which was playing on the phrase.

WWII pilots used it to mean "everything is cool" or "you've got it made" and when poled by a university prophesor as to what it meant they said it had to do with Erol Flynn's easy handling of tough situtions in his movies, but it could be that they just didn't want to say it had to do with his abilities to get in young girls pants in the middle of class in the 1940's.

..... well, I guess it's official now- I'm in. (Envision and I are teaming up again.) Should be interesting as I'll be in italy for 3 weeks and then he'll be in aruba for a week ...

Jack Daniel Stanley
03-14-2006, 01:01 AM
it'd be awesome if you could work in some small part of the storyline -- just a couple of shots or something and shoot that in Aruba -- instant production value

Wow, would THAT ever be a clash in the story line ...

235 Studios
03-14-2006, 01:41 AM
No kidding. But it would be a great location. We could have two flash back scenes, on in which the main character is in aruba, and the other in italy. The only trick would be air fare. Do you think we could get someone to fit in a duffle bag and travel with the checked luggage?

Norm Sanders

If we chop the body up into small enough pieces, yes. Though that may have an impact on the their performance.

Ryam and Norm, I was thinking maybe your super hero's boss could contact him via a little screen on his watch or in the console of his RYNORMmonbile, and Norm could play the superhero boss like sipping a rum drink out of a cocount or somthing.

INT. THE RYNORMAN MOBILE -- NIGHT

BEEP BEEP
BOSS X appears on the communication screen, he sits in a pool chair and is attnded by native girls.

RYNORMAN: Hello X, I see you're working hard agaion.
BOSS X: Not now Rynorman, The Nanny is at it again -- she's stealing babies left and right.
RYNORMAN: Not ... THE NANNY!
BOSS X: She must be stopped!
RYNORMAN: Leave that to me ... you just enjoy your pina colada.
BOSS X: Damn it Ry-

Too late. Rynorman has cut off the Communuctation screen and engaged teh Rynormanmobile thrusters.

Seriously sorry to hear about that. I know it sucks to get excited about something and then get the creaping suspicion that you are headed down a road that will yeild less than desireable results due to resources or personell or whatever.

Glad you spotted it early on and good luch next time.

THanks Curugon. And you should all watch out, cause I won the first DVChallenge over at DVInfo. Totally beat out every single one of the other 3 competitors! ;)

I've watched a zombie fest one (shed) and a couple of the sci fi ones and I must say you guys do great work. My biggest problem in these things is, well of course story, then locations; I tend to have a hard time getting them. But I'm keen and with 2 months, should be a good amount of time, but not enough to dick around. Need to get stuck in.

Is it hard to get access to some of those beautiful New Zealand locations? How easy is it to guerilla-style there? (no Kong pun intended)

Aaron Koolen
03-30-2006, 03:40 PM
Guerilla style is pretty easy here, but of course if I wanted a specialised location like a church, pharmacy I'd have to try and find it. I think I'm a little over just going with what's around me, and I want to try and do something where I can have some freedom in story design, and then find locations to tell that story better. But of course, no matter what I'll do something :)

Is field going to be limited in size? I'm in, but WOW there are going to be a lot of entries.

Jack Daniel Stanley
03-31-2006, 12:58 AM
nope

zombie fest was around 80

scifest was around 60

and there will be people that enter but don't announce it here and people that announce it here that don't enter

if there werer 150 - 200 I don't know what would happen, but I think everyone would be very pleased with up to 100 or so peeps -- the more there are the more exciting and electric it all is (and the more frustrating it is to actually try and see them all and give feedback for each :) )

arielman
04-02-2006, 03:17 PM
If there was 150+ WOW , How Would I watch them all.

I managed with the Zombie 80 entries but for some reason , work I think . I had a more difficult time watching ,reviewing and Voting in the Sci- FI contest.

If there was a 100 or more , maybe more time would be given to watch ,review and Vote .

If there were THAT many, I'd imagine they would give a little more time to watch view them all ... but no matter what, it won't be a liesurely excercise ... it'll be a task to get through that many. I was able to get through all of Sci-Fest and Zombie Fest for viewing, voting, and commenting on each thread.

I'm actually most excited about this one, for some reason, and looking forward to watching these films more than any in the past.

Jack Daniel Stanley

i think most of us have been reading comic books since we were kids. almost everyone is a fan of at least ONE superhero — it's something we connect with.
On the other hand, there's a much smaller group that loves zombies....

So I think this contest may have a lot of entries.

After a brief absence from these halls of infinite wisdom, it is not without some significant dismay and trepidation that I must advise that I will be submitting an entry for Hero Fest.

God help us all.

And I apologize in advance.

Unfortunately, we have to withdraw.

With so much going on our lives it just wasn't possible at this time to put our short together.

A shame too as my bro-in-law had a sweet little script.

I think we're going to do it this summer or fall anyway but right now...

*sigh*

Nope.

Can't be done.

Still, I am absolutely stoked to see what crawls out of the creative pool here at DVXUser. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

All the best and we'll see you next Fest.

sincerely,

ian & Reese

I have to withdraw as well. It sucks so much.

I finally have an able cast and crew willing to work with me but then my camera gets beat up a couple of weeks ago. How sad is that. I have also been busy with my band so its been hard to get funds for a rental...I'm so ridiculously broke. actually negative in the bank right now lol. I would repair it but the parts that I need for it are back ordered till june. :( .... When it rains it pours.

at least i can be happy that my camera is repairable. :D

Good luck to everyone entering the hero fest! Go kick some villian arse!

So, how accurate is the list now? Are there that many entries? That's a lot! Which is awesome, the more the merrier. Variety is the spice of life! How many more cliche sayings can I put in this post?

You should try to stick with one cliche'd saying per post...that will help you get to 100 faster.

So, how accurate is the list now? Are there that many entries? That's a lot!

I counted 70 entrees, if it's up to date. Zombie Fest had about 80 entries, and people were originally thinking there would be as many as 30 ... then 50 ... then ...!

Anyone's guess how many will actually make it in ... could be a lot of last minute entries and there could also be quite a few people that just haven't announced not being able to pull anything together. Hmmm ... I'm really interested in seeing what comes to the table though, especially seeing how many people on that list have been VERY quite during this process.

I've been one of the loudest, so you should feel relatively safe from my entry  . . . or should you?

So, how accurate is the list now?...

last contest about as many uploaded who weren't on the list as the number of people who dropped out (right Brandon?)

I think we'll see 20 - 30% less than the list this time though. That's just a guess on my part.

But there always seems to be an "X" factor in these things as each contest is a little different in the upload process and the way things are announced and just by virtue of the fact that there were contests before it and each had a different vibe, and people just seem to show up for these from the woodwork.

Don't worry Norm...I'll send you a picture of whatever the grand prize is (since I'll be winning, taking the photo should be a cinch)  http://www.nrestudios.com/images/smilies/emote_rotfl.gif

Jarred said to me at Bootcamp that he would "take care of whoever wins it, eh"

I put my finger to my head like a gun and said you mean "take care of?" while pretending to pull the trigger.

He said "no no, stupid Yank, I mean it will be worth their while, eh."

he then put his finger to his head as he said "whoever gets last place - that's who we'll 'take care of', eh."

I swear that's the conversation verbatim. I didn't make any of that up, eh.

You New Yorkers are all alike, stereotyping those poor Canadians like that!

But I'M not stereotyping when I say that. :)

Jack Daniel Stanley
05-30-2006, 08:11 PM
Jarred did not meet any canadian stereo types.

He was wearing a hunting cap with earflaps and had beaver pelts all over his torso, and yes he did roll around Able Cine in a canoe with little runner wheels on it which was filed with empty bottles of Molsen while propelling himself with a hockey stick

...

so no, not stereotypical at all :)

Jack Daniel Stanley

Well, obviously, I'm not participating in this competition. Too much to do (moving, changing girlfriends, changing screenames, etc.). Plus, my heart was never into the genre in the first place. Why does John Hudson have a "Horror-Fest" graphic in his sig? Has the next contest been announced or even hinted at yet?

Without a doubt, next fest will be horrorfest.

Horror is my favorite Genre... so its gonna be the biggest promoted, and probally have the biggest prizes ever. People will have 4 months this time, contest will end Haloween.

Herofest was great because it was the first time I didnt announce prizes. It made me see who really loves making movies. Wish i could give you all a HVX just for entering.
