heyi figured i'd ask this here...

i changed my production company name from Ravines Edge Productions to Zarbaugh Motion Picture Company because there is a housing development near where i live called Ravine's Edge. Now if I were to continue to use the Ravines Edge Productions name could the company that built the housing development sue me for any reason cause of the name even though in my name there is no comma and it has productions at the end of it? I was sorta partial to the Ravines Edge name till i found out about the housing place. thanks for the help

Click NEW USER FORM SEARCH.

I'd say unless they trademarked that name you should be fine. Besides, like you mentioned, the two aren't even the same anyway.

Anyone could call his/her company Ravines Edge Toilet Cleaning Company, for instance. It's not the same.

Typically you only need to be concerned if you're in the same industry. (Benefiting from another name/brand because you also build homes.) Since you're in tv/film production there's no real concern for competition. But that doesn't mean you can open a production company called Starbucks Productions. :)

Similar to Apple (Steve Jobs) and Apple (the Beatles). They agreed that as long as Apple (SJ) doesn't enter the music industry, there's no problem with using the name Apple. But then the iPod/iTunes came out and Apple (the Beatles) got angry and wanted some $$$$.

IMO Keep the name. Don't worry about it.

Also if your in the same town, in the same yellow pages etc., with the same name you could end up in court. They will claim that potential customers might be confused and information might inadvertantly provide your phone number instead of theirs etc..

Did you do a DBA when you started and did you have the name before the builder?
