I just got my first camera yesterday and after waiting thAlree months I can't even get the footage into my PC.

Please help!

HVX is in PC firewire mode (not host). Computer is Dell, Windows XP SP1.

It recognized the HVX once, but I can't get it to do it again.

Should I be feeding into a firewire port that is from the motherboard?
Should I be using my add-on firewire port?
Computer on first, then camera?

All I want to do is look at the damn footage and pull screen grabs to post.

Upgrade to SP2? Or just go buy a USB2.0 card??

I doubt your hardware setup is the problem... Although, you should be running XP SP2. SP2 is necessary for a USB2.0 fix and a host of other things, not just security updates.

I guess the real issue is, what software are you using to pull in the video from your HVX? On the PC, your only current options for capturing DVCPRO/50/HD streams are Avid Xpress Pro 5.2x (you need the latest update) or Canopus Edius Broadcast. Other options are available with additional hardware like the Leitch VelocityHD and Matrox AXIO.

I am not trying to pull the footage in, I am trying to copy it from the P2 to one of my SATA drives.

I can't do that because the computer doesn't recognize the camera, the camera says firewire disconnect. So both pieces are in agreement that they are not seeing each other.

What frustrates me is when I first hooked it up, it did recognize it, I just can't remember what I did the first time.

Hmmm... Well, as suggested before, I would definitely get your Windows up to date. SP3 is just around the corner.

I haven't connected my HVX to a PC yet and don't know if there are any issues. I know that you need to install the P2 Viewer software to use P2 cards inserted into a PCMCIA slot, but I don't know if the software is necessary to capture from the camera or not. I didn't think it was, I was under the impression that the P2 card slots in the camera would just show up as removable media drives just like any other memory card reader.

I should have my P2 cards today or monday and will give it a try when they show up. There may be something wrong with your camera, computer, cable or a connector, but I'm guessing this is a simple issue that can be easily fixed. Try a different firewire port if you have one or a different PC.

Don't use firewire with a PC. It's not guaranteed to work.

You should be using USB Device mode when working with a PC.

Thanks y'all. I figured I would have to go get a USB2.0 card. I have so much crap to post, it is crazy.

My computer will now have an external SCSI, SATA and now USB2.0 card. Unbelievable.

I hate computers.

Thanks. I am going to try my laptop, then my additional firewire card on my main computer. If that doesn't work, I will take Barry's suggestion and switch to USB.0.

After that, I am screwed if it doesn't work. Kinda running out of money here, you know what I mean?

Don't play around. Go USB 2.0. That is the recommended workflow, that is the guaranteed workflow.

If you continue to try to use firewire device mode with a PC, you're asking for errors. It is not a supported mode.

Understood, will do.
