I've heard that you need good lighting with the HVX - it's not very good at dark shots. Is this true?

No. You can shoot your whole movie without any lights...and it will look amazing!
Seriously it's fine. The kind of question you are asking is really hard to answer. Of course you need good lighting with ANY camera...I would suggest heading down to the closest dealer and deciding for yourself. I'm sure you'll be happy with the results.
From what I have seen it is as good or better than any other small HD or HDV camera out there (in low light).
Hope that helps,

A camera is a light-gathering device. If you don't give it light, it will not perform well, and that goes for any camera. If you're in a dark situation, nothing in the world will do more good for your footage than a 60-watt lightbulb.
You need some light in order to make images. You need adequate light in order to make the best images.
