do you think image quality would be similar for filmmaking purpose?

First, it HVX200 and not dvx200.
Also Canon XL-2 is a Standards Definition camera, HVX200 is a High-Definition camera. Ofcourse the hvx200 will look better (If the HD TV is really a HD TV)

If you ment Canon XL-2 and DVX100 (Standards Definition), then they will look mostly the same

if it the HVX200, it will look better if your HD TV is really a HD TV...
Alot of HD TV only take the HD signal but put it into a Standards definition display. Alot of people got screwed with that.

I personally can't answer much to that question since I do not have experience neither of them.

But in term of resolution, hvx will look better on a read HD monitor.
