Is it plausible that the JVC HD100 camcorder (recording HDV at 19Mbps in MPEG-2 on the HDV mini-DV tape cassette) may have original acquisition image quality as good if not better than the Panasonic HVX200 camcorder recording DVCPRO-HD at 100Mbps onto the P2?

This question [and others related HVX vs. HDV] is [/are] answered by Tore B. Nordahl at http://www.coax.tv/Default.htm

I think the answer would be know, I cannot test it by mysefl, but I think HDV is 25mps, not 19mps

And other important thing, waht is the price of a HDV camera, HDv tape .... and what is the cost of the other one. That is a very important thing in the indie world.

HDV is 25mps, not 19mpsSony's HDV is 1080i@25mps, JVC's HDV ('til GY-HD7000) is 720p@19mps.

You know, it is possible that if your subject doesn't move, that during that time the resolution will be higher on the JVC. However, once things start moving the HDV algorithm comes into play. The independent frame nature of DVCPRO HD will win out every single time.

But please go do this experiment for yourself. This particular answer has been given many times over here and all over the web. Just go do it for yourself and you will understand. Analyse the playback of the tape and the P2. Go frame by frame. You will see what is meant.

Best,

Jan

Sorry, I didn't know that.

Well, I took a two day seminar on the JVC HD100 and was completely impressed with the quality of it's uncompressed componant out and the way the Cineform's Prospect HD processes uncompressed video into a 2 frame GOP HDV format is amazing.

Side bar: David, the guy from Cineform, showed us some of a project they are converting and uprezzing for an IMAX film. I mean, Cineform is a brilliant product, but it's only as good as the footage it converts.

So I rented the camera for a weekend recording to miniDV tape and, as Jan says, if the camera is static, the footage is great but once I did a pan or shot my son running around, it was like the resolution dropped through the floor. I used Cineform Aspect HD to play with the footage in Premiere and some of the stuff, frankly, looked like crap.

I'm sure it's partially due to my inexperience with the camera, but no small amount of the blame goes to the JVC HDV "GOP" process. The experience convinced me that the only way to use the JVC is through the componant out and process it into a computer or a device (like the excellent Wafian product, a sister company to Cineform) and let Prospect HD process the footage into a 1080p up to a 1920x108p0 HDV with a 2 frame GOP. Then you can edit it in Premiere and output the video from the Premiere timeline into any format you choose; from Digibeta to DVD.

I chose the Panasonic because, even though there is an 8 page debate about pixel count, the camera shoots 24 in individual progressive frames a second and I don't have to carry around a lot of heavy equipment with me to get that.

Can't wait to play with mine this week!
