Res Charts, fabric charts and a Macbeth chart filmed. SDI captures and HDV of the same test charts.

Here is a quote about how well the XLH1 did up against the f900!

<<< It can be stated emphatically that the XL H1 when printed to 35 mm film really looks excellent – colors, shadows, highlights, range, low noise, etc. It held up very well to the F900. I’m not sure why, and it was a surprise to us, but the F900 had a noisier appearance than the XL H1.>>>>>

<<<When recording HDCam to tape the spatial resolution is 1440 x 1080 (same as HDV) with 3:1:1 chroma (versus 4:2:0) and 8 bits of precision (same). >>>>

<<<< It held up very well to the F900. I’m not sure why, and it was a surprise to us, but the F900 had a noisier appearance than the XL H1.>>>>>

Now who can argue with the XLH1 color space even being in the same ballpark as a F900. WOW!

This is why the XLH is the best choice for film out in the 1/3" CCD world, of course, best results will be from the HD-SDI. I am sure ALL of the 1/3" CCD cameras will look good on a 35mm print but the XLH has the combo of high rez and low noise that will make the cleanest print. This is why most choose the F900 for film out over the Varicam.

That being said... I prefer the Varicam for ANYTHING other than a film out, just as many will perfer the HVX. I think film out is GROSSLY over talked about on forums such as this. At this level the content will drive a film out 100 times more than the camera/codec/etc.

Ash, I agree that the film-out topic is pretty ridiculous, but it goes to the heart of what people are striving for with these cameras. (this IS the online digital filmmaking community, right?) The fact is that for anyone in these forums that might end up being accepted to Sundance would bump their HD film (or even DV) to HDCAM for competition. This may change to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD in the future. No one is going to go to the expense of film out except for the distributor if you've hit the big time.

Still, if you don't want to talk film, then we should consider what camera might produce the best image for a 1080p TV or projection system. I would hazard a guess that the H1 will shine at this level too.

I think striving for a film out is fine, a nice goal but I always preach that the camera is the LAST variable especially once to get to the 3CCD level. It wont increase your chance of getting distribution 1/100th as much as getting a b-rate but known talent... sad but very very true.
