Does anyone know what 3rd party plug-in is needed to get my P2 generated .MXF files to quicktime?

The FCP manual says I'll need to extract the media data and store it within quicktime media files, which requires a 3rd party plug-in that "extends the abiliy of FCP to import MXF-encoded media."

I copied these files directly from the P2 slots on the camera using the "Copy to HHD" function.

Thanks

No plug in is needed, but you'll need FCP 5.0.4. which has the "Import Panasonic p2" function

I'm running 5.0.1. It does have a Panasonic P2 function from Import, however...

When I point to a folder with P2 generated .MXF files within this function, the files are all greyed out, and when I choose that folder, it says:

"Selected path does not contain a P2 volume".

Is what I'm describing what things are supposed to look like (greyed out items aside).

Each "contents" folder has 6 folders:

AUDIO (has .MXF files)
CLIP (has .XML files)
ICON (has .BMP files)
PROXY (empty)
VIDEO (has .MXF files)
VOICE (empty)

It's all new to me, so I'm just wanting to verify that there's not something strange going on.:)

You should point FCP to the contents folder.
And you should have each contents folder inside another folder representing a P2 card with the description txt file.

also, you should upgrade fcp to 5.0.4. It is beneficial for your program. fc should automatically recognize your p2 folder. Go Import panasonic p2 and select the clips for import. fcp recognizes the folder as p2 even if you dragged the folder onto your desktop or straight from the card.

You have to have 5.04 to see the HD files. Earlier versions will suppor the SD domain only.

Hope that helps,
