Any info on how to practically make it look like letters are being written would be greatly appreciated.
This website inspired me.

It's not a very comprehensive tutorial though.
I'd want to use english letters. Any help would be great!
Thanks guys.
Look up vector paint in your manual. That's the easiest way.
I hate that ayato, because it is aways wanting to install the japanese characters :@

I'll have to try this on my own some time, but here is how I understand it:
You need to make the characters in AI (vector) with gradiants on them in the direction and time that you want them to appear on the screen, so that when you apply the Gradient Wipe command, it will wipe with the gradiant accordingly.
Hope that gets you started.

Vector paint is the best way.
Create a new black solids layer and apply Vector paint. In the effects options turn "Composite Paint" to "Only". Now you can see the logo layer beneath the vector paint layer. Choose the correct brush thickness to cover up your logo text that you want to animate.
Now draw over the text completely covering it. When you are done, change the playback mode in your effects setting for the vector paint to "Animate Strokes". You can tweak the animation speed to your liking. Now change back the "Composite Paint" option to "In Original".
Bascially you just created a luma matte. Go to you logo layer and set "Luma Matte" for your track matte. Your logo will now multiply its alpha channel with the luma matte. Where there is white, there will be logo. Where there is black, there will be nothing.
Hope this helps.

Here is a great tutorial on write-on effects from Creative Cow. Should tell you everything you need to know on the subject.
