I asked the same question a few days ago in a separate thread and got no response. I'm considering the same solution, shooting to a laptop.

in 5.2.2 lookup p2 in the help files - you basically need to copy the files into the avid media files/mxf/1 directory and then use the media tool to find them and drag them into your bin - this is the ONLY way to do it - no direct import - but it works great and i have been getting pretty smooth playback with one layer

I think what hkpictures is asking is whether it's possible to capture DVCPRO footage with a firewire cable connected to a PC desktop or laptop without using a P2 card to an AVID Xpress system. I'd also like the answer to this question though I think it's probably no.
It looks like Edius Broadcast is right now the best bet on the PC. Let's hope that changes...

the answer is most definitely YES - i have done it and you can do it for all frame rates - here is how
you must use a 60i frame rate like 24p - 24pn will not work.
Open a project like 720 p 23.xx frame rate
connect camera - open capture tool. SWITCH INTO LOGGING MODE - this allows direct record - if you try it in capture it tries to roll the deck and since there is no card it wont work.
start recording using the record button in the capture tool.
Finally you can overcrank and undercrank for speed effects by changing the frame rate in the scene file without changing the timebase - keep that at 24p (not 24pn)
any questions?

Unfortunately, I do have questions, but I appreciate your offering to help!
I think that, unfortunately, I need it even more broken out. For example, I don't see the record button in the capture tool, and as I've had the HVX200 for a total of 24 hours, I am pretty sure I have it set right for the right frame rate, but if you could give an example of a setting on all of these that worked for you, it would help.

on the camera i beleive under camera settings you should choose 720 24p.
Open avid and create a project at 720 23.xx
connect camera and power up.
click toolset-> capture
use the log/capture toggle to whichever has the big red button (which always means record) there.
Click the red button and record.
to record slow motion - on the camera go into scene file and change the frame rate to greater then 24
for fast motion same but lower then 24
thats all the time i have for now - if that doesnt work out let me know specifically where you get stuck and ill help tomorrow

I'm wondering now if I'm not missing a driver or something. The system sees this as "Panasonic DV Tape Recorder/Player". As for the log/capture, I see a record when it's on "Capture" but not "Logging", which makes me also wonder if I've got something wrong. Basically, it doesn't seem like Avid is seeing this as a device. Maybe I'm an update behind?

I'm guessing here, but don't use logging mode. Stay in Capture. Turn off 'Deck Control' ( the little VTR-icon on the top). This prevents Avid sending VTR-commands to the camera.

Just so you know, there is a new version of Xpress Pro HD for PC. Don't know if it will help you with your issues, but maybe.
It's 5.2.3 and now adds support for the following HVX200 formats:
720p/60p
720p/24p
720p/30p
