Sweet. Ckarcher, this the cam you got from AVS? I'm being patient in my time on hold.. I'm gonna give Barb a call today.
Can't wait to see some footage... I think some of the olympic stuff will be awesome when it comes out as well...

You can remove or obscure this HTTP Server header in a variety of ways, depending on your platform. Apache 2.x users who have the mod_headers module loaded can use a simple directive in their httpd.conf file, as follows:
Header set Server "New Server Name Goes Here"

There's something strange going on with the compressed files with framerates. Looks like frames doubled up when going through a frame at a time. Can you confirm your H264 output settings?

nothing strange on my end...the files playback smooth. everything was shot at 30P with pulldown(59.94) to match the 30p on the Varicam.

How come I can't view these on my mac? I get a message stating the files are not a format quicktime understands. Couldn't open them in final cut pro either. Anyone have an answer?

make sure you have the latest quicktime installed- the files are in h.264 format. If your mac is really old, you may not be able to play the files.

The footage looks great and does play back smooth on my computer but why would the clip be playing back at 60fps if you shot it at 30p? I would guess that shooting 30p does not need any pulldown? When playing back your compressed clip, press cmd-i and notice that your FPS is 60. This would explain why there are double frames since it was shot at 30.
In any case..... great footage.

30P does have pulldown, hence the 59.94. most Varicam DP's will now shoot 30p for broadcast because it reduces strobing on camera pans. This is something you will need to be aware of when shooting 24p. with 30P it's much less apparent. - for more info see the ASC handbook for panning rates for 24fps/ film.

Hi Ckracher,
Are all the files 720, or some of them 1080?
You haven't mention this inormation, and I'd very much like to know...
If any of them are 1080, which are they?

Was this shot progressive or interlaced? It has a strong video look, opposed to a more filmic look that has been posted by some people, like the Wolves footage. Maybe it was the gamma setting?

I believe he said it was shot at 30P.

Beautifull !
what were the exact in camera settings ?

actually, most DP's I work with prefer the 30p framerate. it looks a little less "strobey" and more like film transferred to video. Pulldown on 24P still seems a little too choppy.

I've checked it out on my HD monitor and it's simple awesome looking footage. I love the long shot and it's just MONUMENTAL looking. Like the image looks bigger than the SD stuff you get. More prominent and impactful.
Great stuff.. and Steev (holyzoo) has some great footage on DVinfo. He went to town just like ckarcher....
Ckarcher, is this the cam you got from AVS? Lot of poor slobs like me still waitin'.

this is the cam I got frm Barb @avs. I'd also suggest getting a good on camera LCD monitor for the long lense stuff. the only way i was able to get most o these shots was being able to accurately pull focus. when runing at 60P, even a brief second of delay in focusing can become 2-3 seconds when played back.
I picked up a marshal 7" HD monitor and it mounts to the camera with a sunshade- then powered by a battery belt so i can still pickup the cam/tripod and quickly reset a shot. having a monitor like this really makes the camera more usable. Most of the shots posted were only allowed 1 or 2 takes since we were moving locations and closing highways for the shoot. having good monitoring for HD is critical.
I picked up the monitor and a ERG battery belt at EVS in LA on my way to the shoot- and I'm so glad I did! Give Randy or Rush a call.

ckarcher... that's awesome. I will be buying the Marshall. Found a site selling it for 1250. I just have a couple of questions.. if that's cool.
1. What type of battery belt did you get and how much? how long will it run the monitor?
2. Are you going to get the sony mount batteries?
3. What type of mount did you get for the cam? A heavy duty one or the Marshall ball mount?
4. What type of calibration does it offer to the camera? Do you send the monitor bars and then check... measure or something with the monitor or is it just set ?
Thanks and I'l cry when I pay to buy it.. and then cry when a beautiful image blurs across the screen. Thanks

The battery belt is NRG. Get the NiMh, as the lead acid cells are very heavy, but the NiMH is much lighter. Mine is the 95WH pack. This will run the monitor for a minimum of 9-10 hours.
I don't like the on monitor V mount- it makes the monitor very heavy for an on-camera setup. Just use the battery belt and a 4 pin 10' power cable.
I used the little marshall ball mount hot shoe adapter. This is somewhat flimsy, but it worked ok for the day I needed it. A friend is trying a VF gadget setup and I'll report back on his success.
This little monitor, when calibrated, is fairly accurate- enough that I'm going to get rid of my big, cumbersome Sony CRT field monitor and only use the Marshall. The monitor has a blue check and internal bar generator, although not the SMPTE one I like- but the camera can generate the right bar signal.

Due to the usage of some of the cycling footage being used in an edited piece, I am a little freaked out about image rights and client privacy for elements i have shot. I incorrectly assumed that the clips would be used for private viewing now I fear there may be permission problems with some of the source footage posted to the FTP.
this does bring up some concerns I have about the way this footage may be used... so unfortunately I've pulled client sensitive files off of the FTP... enjoy the rest of the movies!

Ckarcher, was the cycling footage shot in Solvang, CA? I had read that the CSC team was training there recently.

Ckarcher... Thanks for answering my questions. The sony vmount won't be what I buy then. I thought the batteries were lightweight.. and your battery belt solution sounds like a winner... and they are pretty cheap too.
Thanks for the info. Your footage looks breathtaking. I can also understand your concern about the clien'ts footage. I hope everyone will respect your footage and the trust you showed. Maybe for future stuff, a watermark might be good or some text on the image.
I know that when I send out samples to clients or people interested in my work for purchase and stock footage. I always put a window burn with some text and my logo ghosted on the video. A friend of mine sent his film to a distributor for consideration.. and next thing he knew, it was dubbed and floating all around China and Hong Kong. Gotta love the Chinese lack of intellectual/artist rights!
