I have been reading through the many different posts in both the DIY and Lighting sections of the site, looking for some good bulbs to use for a ghetto home made light kit. I have been using a set of halogen worklights with home-made barn doors, and a set of three scoop/clamp lights purchased from Wal-Mart. I had been using old school 8mm "sun gun" bulbs for the scoops, with aid of a dimmer and diffusion, and really liked the bright clean light that they cast. I had originally decided to go with these after a prop scavenging trip to a local thrift store yielded three home movie light bars, complete with bulbs, presumably from the 1970s.

These bulbs worked great, despite being hot as hell to be arround. However, they have all since burned out, and I have been having a hard time finding suitable replacements. I have tried many different flood and spotlight bulbs, but none seem to be quite as good or color neutral as what I had.

Any reccomendations?

Sounds like you are describing photoflood bulbs, which were fairly common in the '70s. I think their biggest disadvantage is they have a very short life and their color balance tends to shift as they age. However, they're cheaper than halogen bulbs and brighter than household bulbs.
I found at least one on B&H:

Some local photo stores still carry them.
