I think Steve Martin is a talented and funny guy. However, I am just dumbfounded by his recent body of work. "The Pink Panther" trailers are so awful I cringe.
So, I thought, why not dwell on the positive and talk about some of the great movies he has done?
Probably my favorite is "Roxanne"
http://imdb.com/title/tt0093886/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9cm94YW 5uZXxmdD0xfG14PTIwfGxtPTUwMHxjbz0xfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x ;fc=1;ft=218;fm=1
The opening tennis racquet fight is classic - especially:
CD (Martin): "I really admire your shoes."
Thug: "What?"
CD: "I love your shoes."
Thug 2: "What do you mean?"
CD: "And I was just thinking: as much as I really admire your shoes, and as much as I'd love to have a pair just like them, I really wouldn't want to be IN your shoes at this particular time and place."
But there are lots of great scenes. Martin wrote this movie, too.

He is an incredibly funny comedian, but that last thing he did that I really liked was Leap of Faith. Before that there was a lot of great stuff, the best being:
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
LA Story
The Jerk
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and
Father of the Bride.
But I think his best stuff came on Saturday Night Live.

The Jerk is probably my favorite Steve Martin movie. Second is Planes Trains and Automobiles.

I remember seeing L.A. Story in the theater and rolling with laughter because it was such a good parody of L.A. Remember the shooting scenes on the highway? Straight out of the headlines. I'd have to agree about The Jerk, though, it was brilliant. So many great lines...so much innuendo.
1. The Jerk
2. L.A. Story
3. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
4. Planes, Trains & Automobiles
5. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.
That's my top 5 in order. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/images/smilies/beer.gif

I forgot about Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. I saw that in the theatre. Lotta fun!!!
Plains, Trains... is really good as well.
LA Story is my second favorite because there's so much going on there. It's intelligent humor. Really solid.

There was a time I wondered if he was all that funny (When I was a kid, I hated his stand up). But now I absolutely love him. He is who he is...he will never be able to play Hamlet but to me the guy is a talent. I especially love him when he is playing a human in a tight spot...FATHER OF THE BRIDE or PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES...but, the JERK was hilarious. And I LOVED LA STORY. ALL OF ME was great. I could go on and on.

The Jerk.
"Dear mom and dad, today I found out my secret purpose!..."
I sort of liked "The Man with Two Brains." Not sure why- just amused me.
"Dead Men Wear Plaid." HA!
"Cleaning woman! CLEANING WOMAN!"
that was really shot well to go with old movie scenes. I think it was under-appreciated.

I think he is a horrible actor and I can't stand his films. I don't find him funny at all..... sorry..
So what you're REALLY saying is that in a thread for Funniest Steve Martin Moments when you knew you didnt have one, you replied anyway to say you dont find him funny and cant stand his films....so, following that logic, your funniest Steve Martin moment would be all the other funny moments you ever experienced that did NOT in fact, have any inclusion of Steve Martin...which would be like, all of them. Since you dont find him funny at all. ;)

You aren't old enough to remember the old stuff, at least I hope that is the case.
He hasn't done anything worth a damn as of late, I'll give you that.
Go back to the mid 90's with "Spanish Prisoner". He pulls a nice dramatic on that one.
3 Amigos was the last good comedy. I think he was great at basically playing himself in the early 1900's.
Go back, brother. I think your mind will change.
I mean, I can't stand Tom Hanks, but he can still impress me.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and The Jerk. For sure. In fact I think those are going in my netflix queue right now.

Hanks can still impress me, like I said. Maybe it's the years, maybe it's the choise of rolls, but I don't seek his face anymore.
Now, I know I will get flamed for this; but after the the whole "A.I." thing, Spielberg is lost to me. He seems shifty and will get away with things just because he can. Kubric was his friend and Spielberg took his 10 year vision and distorted to a Spielberg film. It wasn't his to distort. Kubric worked on the film for 10 years. I would never do that to some one I called a friend. He can come back with cool things like "Minority Report" and "Munich" (because he is talented) but he remains in the "bunghole" catagory in my book.
I'm a big Kubrick fan, can't you tell?
CallaghanFilms
02-15-2006, 04:10 PM
Fair enough...
but IMO the opposite is true. I feel A.I. would have been an ugly mess if Spielberg hadn't worked his magic on it.
Not trying to rehash a pair of old DVXUser debates (one on Spielberg and one on Kubrick)...
but I'll say again: IMHO Kubrick was a decent filmmaker that made a couple of truly great films (Dr. Strangelove and The Shining)
As far as Hanks goes, he has inherited the Everyman torch from Jimmy Stewart, as is as good as it gets acting-wise.
We'll just have to agree to disagree.
Cheers
Once again...great points on Steve Martin.

I won't dig in this hole too deep, but don't forget "Clockwork Orange", "2001" and "Full Metal Jacket".
That said, I will back away from this debate and save it for some other time.

Okay... I'm not much of a fan of Kubrick. Liked The Killing, The Shining. 2001 hasn't worn as well through the years as I had hoped. Dr. Strangelove...has some funny things in it but I have to struggle not to fall asleep. Clockwork Orange...never got into it. Full Metal Jacket...okay.
Spielberg is great. He's got some low points but his body of work is overwhelmingly excellent.
Hanks is fun to watch. Even in a "chick flick." I even bought his character in The Terminal. He was superb in Apollo 13. How come he isn't credited in Radio Flyer?
Now, I wouldn't disparage anyone for liking Kubrick. He's just a little over rated IMO.
I think A.I. was a problem child (no pun intended) no matter who did what to who or where. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/images/smilies/beer.gif

There have been a few films since that have been funny in
spite of him (Vegas Vacation comes to mind.)

It's been a long time since he's put out anything really good, you're right. But he DOES have some great stuff earlier in his career.

I feel the same way about Chevy. His movies are sometimes funny in-spite of him. He was funny in the Vacation stuff (some of it, anyway) and wasn't bad in Caddyshack, though Rodney STOLE that movie. He was MUCH better on SNL and I don't believe he was really ready from PRIME TIME. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

I can think of a couple that are still hangin' but in general I think the really good ones start to become too obsessed with their image and that causes them to try to "play it safe" and that does no one any good. Look at some of the "old timers" that can still disappear into their roles:
Gene Hackman (though he seems to be playing the same character too much now days)
Tommy Lee Jones
Sean Connery (I'll take the rapists for 200, Alex)
and I believe that Harrison Ford has grown and "aged well" with his roles.

Since "Spanish Prisoner", the only decent movie Martin has done is "Novocaine".
"Bowfinger" has its moments, but I find it hard to sit through.
I haven't seen "Shopgirl" and then there's hope with the upcoming "Picasso at the Lapine Agile". He's far better when he writes the movie.

Sorry but no I don't think actors lose their gift. After 20+ years in the business I think actors get stale and make bad choices based on material they are offered. Why would a comediene not lose their gift over time but an actor surely?
If a comediene is unable to adapt and grow surely they're 15 minutes will last just about 15...Pauley Shore, Bobcat Bob, Farley, etc.
As for actors, the best way to stay fresh is new challenges... hard to do if the Hwood system keeps offering you the same role with a new name or subpar garbage you do to pay the bills.
If you stay "in shape" with your art, and are open to grow and take chances there is absolutely no reason to think that at 50 you'll lose your gift. That's just crazy. The only artists that have to worry about their gift definitely changing with age are singers.

Thanks for the slap in the face. I wrote Martin off too soon. Novocaine and Bowfinger are both a good time. It is Martin doing his thing. Man, I feel like such and ass.
On the Chevy thing...He should be funny forever, that bastard. I don't know what happened. Maybe it started with the Doritos commercial. He and Bill Murray were my favorites from the OG SNL crew.
Thank God Murry still has it. He lost it for a year or 2, but he came back with guns blazing.
