My friend is lucky enough to own one of the panasonic 720p varicams, he let me get a couple shots of the area around him, no 35mm adapter but shot in 24p with a 1/60 shutter speed. I dont know that much about cameras so tell me what you think?

This doesn't make sense. If this was a Varicam and not a HVX it wouldn't need a 35mm adapter. The Varicam isn't a fixed lens camera. The footage looked okay need more action or movement in the shots. Plus they are too long.

I think he means it wasnt shot with a 35mm lense.

You've got vignetting (the hard kind where you can see the lens barrel, not the soft fall-off) like crazy. What kind of lense are you using?

Also, the auto-iris and heavy compression kill it. If you said you'd shot it on a $250 Canon I wouldn't doubt it, sadly. I'm sure it looks much better in full resolution, though.

The last shot of the sunset is nice, though.

haha yeah, the only thing keeping me from saying its not is the 24p, cant beat that.

I can't speak for all, but these eyes can't tell much of anything from footage that heavily compressed. And yeah, that vignetting is kinda ridiculous. I hope your friend knows how to use that Varicam properly, at least.

I get the feeling this poster is pulling our leg. This looks like standard interlaced consumer grade video with the pulldown done in post. The movement looks really choppy like it was done badly (at least on my screen). Seriously doubt this is an XL2 let alone a varicam.

One things for sure; you ain't doing the Varicam justice.

This happens when you're using a 4x3 lens with a 16x9 camera. Some lenses are switchable and in this case it was probably on the wrong setting.

I don't think it is a Varicam either. The pans are very jerky, suggesting a cheap tripod... not likely to be found under a Varicam. Also there is a fair bit of streaking from the Sunset.

So was it really a Varicam?

I always like watching people's footage. I like seeing someone else's "eye" if you know what I mean. :)

But just out of curiosity ... what does this have to do with the HVX200?

This Varicam? If so, I don't think the compositions do it justice.

I've seen much better stuff from Disjecta.

Then again, I'm looking at a small compressed webfile.

Well I know my cheapo Sony Digital8 camera can do the same type of footage.
It could be because of the very low resolution. Here is a clip live rightnow of my camera on a Radio show.

It a world record of the longest kiss. They been doing that since 5AM Feb 14 Eastern time.

They have a 5 minutes break every hours. It should end at about 5 PM Eastern, or something...

True this may not be a varicam, but this camera still is better than digital 8. Its still clearly a 3 chip camera.
