Very interesting Grammy Performance (http://www.youtube.com/w/Madonna-Sing%27s-%40-2006-Grammys%21?v=TXpHnSpYUjg&feature=Views&page=1&t=t&f=b).
This was actually pretty cool (until the dance sequence). When Madonna walks behind the 3D quitarist it had me fooled at first. But, upon second viewing, the trick was revealed.
The part that is really funny is when Madonna does the "Apache (http://www.boingboing.net/2005/05/04/disco_apache_video.html)" dance (aka the Barry Green dance). It's about half-way into the video. See if you can spot it.

That was cool. And I never get tired of watching the Apache video.

It was very cool. The gorillaz are doing a summer tour this year and it is going to be very interesting to see how they do it. Last time the did a tour the band members played behind a screen just in silote and images were projected on another screen. Not like what we have here.

Twice as many people watched American Idol than the Grammy's and the number one album is by Barry Manninose. Things that make you go hmmm...

The tech was good but they abandoned the established aesthetic of Gorillaz. The normal 2d animation of them is classic, and had been well maintained in their music videos which take place in a 3d environment. This 3d version of them made the stylistic choices of the original animation (such as the short torsos and long skinny appendages) seem straight up creepy and malformed. I did like the choices of actions that Gorillaz did during rests, I just wished they had maintained the original aesthetic within the 3-D space. My guess is that they didn't want to do that much hand animation along with 3-D for something as banal and masturbatory as the Grammy's.

Yeah, well Mick Jagger is over 60 and Steven Tyler is over 50 and they're still wearing the same outfits too... And if I look that good when I'm there, I will be, too... ;)
How the hell did they do that?
well this is my guess, when she first popped up it looked kinda funny to me... so I watched it again on tivo, and when she walks behind and infront of the animations she casts shadows on them and they cast shadows on her which wouldnt work in reality, so she exsists in the same world as them i.e she is just video.

Yep, everything up until the dance sequence was pre-recorded and projected, including Madonna. The dance sequence was the only thing live. Still pretty clever. Sounded like some of the people in the audience were fooled as well. You can hear people screaming when Madonna makes her entrance. :)
