I just saw the trailer for Firewall. Does this remind anyone else of Ransom?

Yeah, Harrison Ford is great. He's developed a vulnerability that makes him more the everyman that can be identified with.

I'll say it....CHICK FLICK!
Anyway, my feeling about Firewall in general was another internet catchphrase movie??? Like "The Net" with Sandra "Speed is my middle name" Bullock????
What's next? "Norton's Disk Doctor" starring Ed Norton?
* Sigh *

Wired.com had a pretty scathing review of this movie that I just posted to an IT Security Web site that I do newsletters for. Here's my synopsis of the Wired review:
The new Harrison Ford suspense-thriller Firewall thrusts security professionals onto the silver screen, but the story is plagued with "preposterous contrivances and idiotic villains," this review says. Among its faults: Ford's character is a security whiz who inexplicably uses the name of his boat as his security password, and he can build an inpenetrable network, but overlooks a Trojan on his computer.

Harrison Ford's quote from the film.... "...change of plans."
Isn't that exactly what Mel Gibson says in Ransom?

That response from IT security specialists is typical of what any specialty or trade organization would say in response to a Hollywood interpretation of what they do day in and day out.
Hollywood almost never gets it right. I got a call from a network show Art Director who was trying to create an FBI computer lab - "...what should it look like?" he wanted to know.
"Uh... I have absolutely no idea. What about something like a technology company office skirted by cleanrooms with cable troughing overhead, a halon system and off-the-shelf security equipment in every doorway?"
If you know the show I'm talking about, you can see the result of this suggestion in primetime each week. Yikes.
Anyway - most Americans who go to watch a Harrison Ford movie don't know what IT stands for, let alone what it takes to create an alpha equivalent of 128-bit encryption standard.
This movie looks very suspiciously like the Ransom picture - yessir.

True Overland. I often wonder though when I see movies that are just wayyyyyy off if the writers bothered to write what they know...

I agree. We quickly complain about errors that we see because we have inside knowledge of the subject of a film when, in fact, most of the viewing public could really care less. They're looking for a good story or to see their favorite actor/actress.

hahaha good one. When I saw the trailer I thought the name "Firewall" was trying to sound all techy and what not.
Blaine: Yes it does remind me of Ransom.

Don LaFontaine:
For security specialist Jack Stanfield... technology has always been a way of life.
Now... he must defeat his own system to save what matters the most...
His family.
Harrison Ford...
Virginia Madsen...
Paul Bettany...
FIREWALL!
For anyone in Nebraska who doesn't know what the hell this is all about: Harrison Ford's character, who, by day, creates security systems which utilize vitual firewalls, is also a father, who must protect his family - serving as a metaphorical "firewall" of sorts. There will be an interactive certification course shortly following this teaser.

just saw this movie.... it wasnt that bad. it took a while for the real action to start. the action pretty much happens only at the end. before that it was basically a cat and mouse game. ford trying to get away from bettany to save his family but fails everytime.... other than that it was a really good movie.
Bettany is a really really good bad guy in this movie :) its worth seeing it just to see him play a bad mofo lol

i didn't think so. the bad guys are around him all the time following him everywhere he goes (it's been a while since i've seen ransom so i don't remember if the bad guy was around all the time or not, from what i remember i dont think he was). There are 4 bad guys in this one all with certain abilities. the computer guy is sorta second guessing everything thats going on and doesn't feel right doing things he has to do.
The money part is like Ransom, give them the money or the family dies. but he has to hack into his own security system to do it.
Overall good film. Bettany was soooo good as the bad guy, just an evil person.

hahaha... he uses the name of his boat as a password? i wonder why directors think that passwords such as those would be used by an actual professional? and get this... they consulted an actual "security professional" to make the security believeable!!!
from the wired.com review
Lawrence Levine of SecurePipe, a security management company that lists financial institutions among its customers, served as technical advisor for the film. He might want to have his name removed from the credits or find another line of work.
i have set up security for a few small businesses and... believe me.. when i set up a password its all alphanumeric and about 16 characters long... a real security professional would probably set up security to his own computer to be a looooong password and also a biometric fingerprint scanner (since they sell those now).
I might not like this film :( since im a techie and i cant stand to see errors like that being made by a security professional in films. i might see it when it comes out on dvd to rent.

Well I saw this film tonight. First impressions. Fun movie, very entertaining. The pacing in the beginning was a bit slow, but it picked up nicely and moved along toward the end.
Paul Bettany was a very good villan, and Harrison was great as always. I thought that the writer, and director did a great job of writing Harrison's part. He was an old guy. He got beat up, and you could tell it hurt him more than it would a younger guy. It seemed very realistic to me.
YOU ARE WARNED THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD!
The only things that bothered me about this film was some of the coincidences, and the unbelievablity of the "heist". I mean, making an image scanner from a fax machine and Ipod, and just happen to be having a GPS on your dog's collar. Somewhat coincidental happenings that helped the story transpire. Those are my few content complaints, but overall I enjoyed the film, and it's worth two hours of your time.

SPOILER, maybe....
At the end of the movie, all 3 members of Ford's family have their hands bound behind their backs. They run off as Ford fights Bettany. Ford beats Bettany. They all come back from around the corner. All three miraculously are no longer bound with their hands behind their backs and can freely run and hug Dad.
Did I miss something... did they edit out the scene where they find a piece of broken glass and cut free? Did they just think the audience would forget? Stupid!(unless I blinked and missed something that would explain it)
also thought it was super cheesy having Ford pick up the dog, look yonder and behold, an abandoned shack on the edge of the lake.
This film is just so,so. Better renter than theatre flick.

i have set up security for a few small businesses and... believe me.. when i set up a password its all alphanumeric and about 16 characters long...
Which does nothing but encourage the user to write the password down...probably on a yellow sticky underneath the keyboard.
And then they make us change them every 90 days, and you can't reuse them before 12 changes have gone by.
And there's a different password for each system we have to log onto.
