View Full Version : When the poo poo hits the fan...

Okay, so what better to do with a $6,000 high-def overcranked 60fps slow-motion-master video camera? Let's take it to the DOG PARK and see what we can find...

Let's check the inventory:

1. A shovel. Check.
http://www.fiftv.com/HVX200/Shovel.jpg

2. A fan. Check.
http://www.fiftv.com/HVX200/Fan.jpg

3. A load. Check. (apparently this is a popular dog park)
http://www.fiftv.com/HVX200/The-Load.jpg

Okay, so now to answer the age-old question -- what really does happen when the poo poo hits the fan?

HAHAHA! Nice...I wish all demos of this cam would be stuff like this. You get to see something funny and some great images! Thanks for the humor Barry, a much needed laugh after a long day!

Dare I say that footage looked very clean (minus the dog crap)! Thanks for posting Barry. It looks like you have figured out the best settings for the camera to deliver a very clean image. You have also found a decent way to compress the image for the web.

1. What were your camera settings?

2. What were your Quicktime export settings?

3. When shooting, what is the desired f-stop for the camera (for the best image)?

4. What zoom position (focal length) gives the best image?

5. What's the meaning of life?

Thanks!

It's OK if you can't answer all of the questions, but please try to answer the last one (it's been bugging me for awhile)!

NOTE:
I'm sure with so many HVX200 users (in the near future), we will see slow motion over used, but honestly, I may never get tired of it. I just saw the WILD BUNCH for the first time last week!

Barry.

Wonderfully abstract. I think the poo from the dog in question was a bit too consitant and healty... What we need here is a shitszu with a real case of mud butt... but again aesthetics about shit is something I can drone on and on about.

1. What were your camera settings?
720/24pN at 60fps with 180.0d shutter; detail 0, coring +3, chroma level +2, master ped -4, cinelike-v gamma, cinelike matrix.

2. What were your Quicktime export settings?
Brought the footage into Vegas through Raylight. Used the "curves" filter with "more contrast" preset. Exported to QT using MPEG-4, 50% quality.

3. When shooting, what is the desired f-stop for the camera (for the best image)?
Haven't really found one, they all seem to work well. Stay away from F/11, and I even shy away from 9.6 but 9.6 is okay if you have to use it. But I haven't found any reason to stay with any particular stop yet.

4. What zoom position (focal length) gives the best image?
Well, in this shot I was at mega-telephoto. As you can well imagine. I wanted to be way clear of the splatter zone. But it was a fairly sunny day, so I was still down around 5.6 or 8 I think. I don't know that I've found a sweet spot for the lens, focal-length-wise yet.

5. What's the meaning of life?
42.

It's powered by squirrels, of course!

That was great, Barry. But I didn't really enjoy it because of the unanswered questions about the CCD resolution.

This was one of the big reasons I got this camera...not to put poo in a fan in slow-mo, even thou it does look like fun. But to shoot stuff in slow motion and watch it right afterwards. Most of the time I just leave the camera in 60fps mode. Good stuff Barry.

What's the fan plugged into? You have powered Dog Parks out there?
It's plugged into a Coleman 1200W inverter, which is attached to a Booster Pac jump-start battery.

And yes, I threw the fan away after this little adventure.

Barry, did you wrote the screenplay all by yourself? :)

I wonder when the first camera with smell comes out. AG-SVX300, DVC-Pro-Smell-HD, 4:2:2:2 at 60 smells per second. :D

So what was the shovel's motivation? Who was attacking who? What came first.. the shovel or the shit?....

Bergman worked in those terms.. too bad he poo poo'd around without really discovering the shit like Barry.

Hi Barry,

I suggest maybe we do an international project.
come to Israel and do some tests here, we have a lot of crap here..;)
Actually we can do a feature.:)

Now seriously, i thank you for everything youre doing, i find this site so helpful
And it also helps me not thinking about this crappy country. and believe me-Its a crappy country.

Thanks again barry and to the rest of you out there for doing all of this and sharing it with us.

Question- any info on when will the Pal version comes out???

Peace in the middle east.

mook_funk

I'll take you up on that Israel thing, maybe sometime 2007; I've got some stuff I'd love to shoot in the "Holy Land."

As far as PAL, the Europeans should start getting theirs in about six weeks. Don't know about when the rest of the world will get it.

Hi Barry,

Ill be happy to show you around.
As far as scenery, landscape and ofcourse the holy places, youre gonna love it here in Israel. (the food here is also very good)

Maybe i was too harsh with that "crapy" thing i said...
anyway, i realy recomend for everyone to visit Israel. its something different.

Thanx for the PAL info and carry on with this "Holy work" youre doing.

Shalom,

So, are you called 'The Professor' because of that comment Barry made somewhere about you being like The Professor on Gilligan's Island?

I wish I could add the sounds, but I only found the WEB page that does that, I didn't write it.

The title, 'The Professor', came because I teach at El Camino College and the idea come up about me being like the Professor on Gilligan's Island.

I wish you would have wet down the dog shlt a little bit and placed a piece of plexiglass in front of the camera so we could have that nice wet splatter shot.
Let's see a part 2!:)
