I've been checking around for editing desk's and just about keeled over at the prices. Who wants to pay two grand for a desk? Anyhow, does anyone know where I can find plans for an editing desk? I Just need some kind of reference for measurements. Even if its just something to refer to. I kind of have my own design in my head, but I want to make sure that my measurements make sense.

Well, all you really need to do is figure out how high you want the desk top to be. Will you have a rolling drawer for your keyboard or not. If so make sure there's enough space under the desk top before your knees ramm into it. Are your monitors going to be on an elevated shelf above the desktop? Just measure how many inches abaove from the desk top you want them to be for comfortable viewing. I'm actually tinkering around with the idea of building my own desk as well. I'm starting to out grow mine. :)

I got this one from Office Depot for work. I have a Dell 24" on top of it, two big speakers on the side elevated pieces, an audio board on the left little piece and my NTSC monitor on the right. And from the experience I have had with the OmniRaxx and the incredible cheapness of the compound board that they use, for the price, this is a much better piece of wood. Of course, this does not have a rack built-in, but like I said, this was for work and we keep all our decks in a large setup in another room, not in our editing suites. Hope you find something that works!

Thanks for the replies fellas. I've been reading around and it sounds like most people are just converting office depot desks. I do have a desk right now, but I can't get my speakers wide enough on it for a good stereo field. I figured it's time to just build one. I've been wanting the studio to look a little more professional anyways...for the sake of impressions. I'm gonna build one soon so I'll post pics in case anyone is interesed. Thanks again for the replies.

Cheaper than office depot, sturdier, can be customized and combined with a lot of accessories. Have a look at their other office furniture lines, too.

I've got an editing desk made from two pieces of corner cut vinyl countertop, seated over three adjustable steel sawhorses. I think the total cost to me was something like $90, all from Home Depot. I've used it for about three years now and the top's surface is great -- you can sit all kinds of things on it, like hot beverages, and if you spill anything, cleanup "is a snap."
Were I to do it again, I'd find a curved piece of vinyl -- a 90 degree corner is weird to sit in all the time... but it's height-adjustable, has a lot of surface real-estate, and the sawhorses have a maximum load of something ridiculous like 1,200lb each. I've got a Sony PVM14 monitor, two 17" LCD's, a pair of speakers, a stack of external drives, an HP Laserjet all ontop and still plenty of room for my KB and space to hand grind glass :D

I have to agree with the link the Ikea Jerker desk. I've been using that for some time now and for the price you can't beat it. The desktop surface is huge and cut in at the front so you can sit right up to the desk and feel comfortable. This for sure is the best desk you could get for a decent price. You won't be disapointed. Get a desk at office depot for your paperwork..not for editing.
Here is another tip if you have any carpentary skills or you know some friends who do. TBC has great desks for editing but are very expensive. What you can do is click on the desk model, click on "specifications pdf" and download it to use as plans to make your own at a fifth of the cost. Good luck!

I got this great cart/desk at Staples. $100 marked down from $150, comes with shelves on both sides (I don't have them installed). On locking casters, very functional, great ergonomics, great deal.

It's a 9 ft. desk with a middle compartment for my cpu. Girlfriends laptop on the left, my computer on the right. The bigger desk the better I think.

I've been using a staples desk and mounted to speaker stands to it. I'm hoping to build a custom job next fall.

i have owned other desks by omnirax, middle atlantic, etc. and the argosy stuff smokes it all. the big diff is argosy is made of mdf rather than particle board. i have moved this desk 4 times breaking it down each time and it hasn't even begun to fall apart. my omnirax c2 fell apart after one move....

Ok that's more like it. Thanks everyone for sending the pics of your desks. I can see that some have made use of some really inexpensive desks....very resourceful!! On the other hand the argosy takes the cake. I'm feeling kind of adventurous. I think I'll try to come close to cheezweezl's desk. I'll post pics when I'm done. Given that I don't get to intimidated. Thanks again ya'll.
