For those who are interested, there is an interview with Jim Jannard at HD For Indies (http://www.hdforindies.com/).

It was just posted a little while ago.

Wow, where's that timemachine when you need it :)

You know what's scary?

NAB 2005 HVX200
NAB 2006 RED camera
NAB 2007 ???

I think it's interesting that he states there will be stripped down versions.

Does he mean a 1080p only model with only a few frame rates and a 4k full on model or what? hmmmm

I really hate the drive down to Vegas from Cali but NAB and RED are making me think twice about going. Grrr.

I still will always love the genesis.

I still will always love the genesis.

It's not hard to love the Genesis.
It's hard to afford it... but it's easy to love it.

Hopefully RED will give us the ability to do both.

@Mr. Blonde -
I've been thinking about this as well, and I don't think he means he's planning to sell crippled REDs with no 4k ability. Here's my current theory, you can all tell me what you think.

1. He starts with a basic RED model, say, for argument's sake, $10k out of the box. It comes with NOTHING. No lenses, batteries, or storage. In other words, not really a camera yet, just a middleman device with that S35 sensor and all the good stuff.

2. He builds red packages to go with the camera, billed as being good UP TO 1080, 2K or what have you. These packages will be market-dictated in their pricing, I.E. like P2 cards, they'll get cheaper as time goes on. Maybe $5k buys you a decent HD zoom lens, a battery and two "REDFlash" cards. Maybe $20K buys a raid array and a set of RED primes which can resolve up to 2k. Since everything's modular, you customize to fit your own needs.

Seems to me that would be a genuine REVOLUTION in the Jannard sense - and it still offers a nice cozy place for 3rd parties on the peripheral bandwagon (follow focus, anyone?).

That was a great article, and it seems like this RED thing is for real. I have been trying to avoid discussing this thing like the plague because until there is something concrete out there it is all just mental masterbation. Then again, Jim really seems to be working hard to ensure that people know that he is legit and putting out this unit. The price issue is still of massive concern, but I think that NAB is going to be very interesting. Hopefully we can get a daily report posted here or something along those lines.

Yeah, I'm real curious about the modularity of the RED camera too...

And I'd hate to drive all the way to Vegas too, especially the bottom Atlantic part!

Well, I suppose I wonīt be able to go to Las Vegas but I will hang around in this forum then to squeeze every information out of it. My latest project got delayed so it might be worth waiting for that cam.

By the way: Nor in the interview nor on the homepage there isnīt any word about the compatibility of the RED with european standards. Will the RED do 25p and 50i?
