I can't believe "Big Momma's House 2" got 8 nominations. Good job Martin Lawrence, you were robbed when they didn't nominate "Black Night".
Seriously, though, I would've loved to see "The Constant Gardener" nominated for best picture. Oh well.

Here's a link to all the nominations (http://www.oscars.org/78academyawards/noms.html)
In case anyone is interested.
Ones that I thought were interesting:
Terrence Howard nominated for Best Actor (Hustle & Flow)
Murderball nominated for Best Documentary
Matthew B. Moore

I wish the Academy was real. It would be so cool if the AAs ment what they used to.

i'm not trying to start an argument here.... i'm tired of Brokeback Mountain winning EVERY award for best picture and director.... i'm tired of it. Munich was a much better film and personally i think Spielberg directed Munich better than Lee did Brokeback Mountain. IMO Ang Lee shouldn't have been nominated for best director just because he directed The Hulk....

No Cinematography nomination for Pride and Prejudice? :( IMO Best camera work of the past year, easily. Cinderella Man should have gotten a nod too.
No nomination for Crowe? Come on, rob him of award for Beautiful Mind for punching the producer or whoever that was on Golden Globes (which he received) and now rob him of the nomination itself because of that hotel incident? Wtf is up with objectivity at Oscars these days?
At least Munich got 5 noms...
P.S. And Memoirs are overrated. Pretty picture without much substance.
No King Kong for best movie!! Those hollywood people!! Then they give George Cloony a nomination.
Best documentary nomination: This was done with a DVX100 I think
Murderball” (THINKFilm)

Grrrr... did the Academy see the same version of "Crash" that I did?
I saw a preachy & remarkably naive film on race relations that had NOTHING to say. It's tough to get that many contradictions into a single film... and it's even worse when the filmmakers take it so seriously.

The AA is a political event in Hollywood. Garbage performances, actors, and scripts can get a huge push from their companies, publicists, and buzz and all of a sudden be huge contenders. The only thing it really does is provide good fodder for the DVD market and also add more type setting in trailers 'Featuring Academy Award Nominee XHF' 'With Academy Award Winner HDAHG'.
I hate these award shows because it is subjective and they are trying to place this blanket statement across the board. Maybe to me Big Momma's House 2 made me want to be a better person, or get that sex change operation I've been debating. To me that's the best movie of all time. This stuff is crap though.

I just read the academy nominations, WHAT A JOKE.
At least Philip Seymour Hoffman gains the recognition he deserves...
Where is A History of Violence in the nominations? It should certainly be nominated for best picture/director, as should Match Point. Munich was a nice surprise since it did not recieve much box office attention. Paul Haggis' Crash is a joke, I've never seen anyone that rasict, especially in public, except in that movie. Not to mention Good Night and Good Luck was nominated for picture/director/cinematography? even cinematography? maybe it was my theater but I almost got a headache from the blacks and greys in this movie. Very hard to see characters faces clearly, I watch more black and white movies everyday than anyone else I have met, and this was the first in a long while to strike me as painful to watch (strain on the eyes) because of the black and white. The movie, however, I thought was very interesting and goes by quickly because the story can involve you. It was definitly not the best picture, nor best directed, not even in the competition's league.
Brokeback Mountain was a great movie. However, it does not really push the boundaries of filmmaking. One may argue the story pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable and what is not. I disagree in some ways because I have seen many other gay films stir similar ideas and have similar themes. I don't see anything truely new in Brokeback Mountain, except that it is recieving an enormous amount of attention.
The Academy Awards are traveling in a direction I do not agree with. Last year for instance Million Dollar Baby won over The Aviator, which I feel was wrong, and possibly awarded because of Clint Eastwood's age. Maybe my opinions come from different considerations. I feel best picture, best director, best cinematography, and the best screenplays, along with the other important awards, should be given to those who push the limits.

it's weird how so many white people don't like CRASH maybe they see another world in their neighborhood? TERANCE HOWARD'S short performance was the best i've seen since EMMA THOMPSON'S SHORT ACT; LOVE ACTUALLY. I ACTUALLY THOUGHT THE MOVIE STIRRED AWAY FROM THE STEREO TYPICAL. AND SHOWED MORE INNER CONFLICT BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS

I agree with you. I liked Crash though... that comes in at a close second for me. I absolutley loved the movie. The content was hard to take but the acting and story were great!
Kong was a good movie but IMO but it didn't deserve a nomination for best picture (i know it didnt get nominated i'm saying that's a good thing.)
Haven't seen Capote yet... probably going to see all the movies that are nominated for best picture that i haven't already seen this weekend.

I was wayyy surprised by William Hurt getting nominated.
I mean, how many minutes of screen time did he get? 20? 10? Surely not much more than 20 minutes. It's really badass they decided to nominate him, I think.
I don't really want Brokeback to win everything. It really just seems like hotbutton topic right now, which will let it win, and leave other very good movies in the lurch.
I'm not saying it's bad, in fact, i concede that it will probably win a buncha stuff deservingly (as much as I'd love for History of Violence to win the screenplay award), but I highly doubt that it should beat out both Munich and Good Night and Crash for directing. All of those were superb.
I think Crash was good, and i think people don't view it from the right viewpoint. I don't think it's about racism, I think the racism in the movie is a way to get a better view of just people in general. The point was we're all both bad and good and that there is no black and white. At least that's what I think.
But for best director--I'd say Spielberg. Clooney in close second-he made a dialogue driven movie about something that happened 50 years ago and made it interesting to boot. Paced well, despite a lack of action.
Best supporting is where i'm really torn. 3 out of the 5 I want to win. Dillon, Giamatti, and Hurt. I guess in the end I'd have to say Giamatti just because he got so fucked on sideways.
I hate myself when I talk about the AA's, but I can't help getting excited/pissed off.

Same here, Spencer. I know I'll be up all night by the TV on March 1st just like last year and all the years before that.
But right now the thing that's pissing me the most is the Cinematography nomination. Simply because P&P was such a clear winner for me. Seriously, AMAZING camera work that coupled with all around great acting and beautiful art direction makes you forget that you're watching a chick flick... with a chick.
I'd probably dump Batman Begins, because I don't remember it standing out in that department. Or maybe Memoirs of Geisha, because it cheated its way into the nominees list. Art Direction and Costumes? Totally! Absolutely gorgeus setting, tons of eye candy. But the camera was rather calm and... classic? Not much to talk about. (Don't know about Brokeback Mountain or GN&GL, because I haven't seen either yet)
Now that I think about it, again, War of the Worlds should of been nominated too. If only for that highway van shot. And that handheld running shot during first tripod appearance. Man, it actually had lots of good stuff...
And Crowe... :( and... Zellweger :(

Matthew B. Moore

When was that, and what exactly did they used to mean?
I guess around the time "Titanic" came out. The whole thing seem to feel more and more like a farse each year from that point on. It seems like the point is missed alot.
Before they seemed to mean something. The techs are recognized at a dinner instead of the main event. It is not what it was.
Not hating, just observing with a little perspective.

Well I have to say that Im excited that crash is nominated for best picture. Whether or not it will win, I dont know, with the reputation that brokeback is getting. Personally I think the acting in Crash was better, well, it stayed with me longer and the initial film shook me up a bit more.
Brokeback wasnt as good as people have said it is. actors did a good job portraying those characters, but it to me isnt best picture worthy. But best pictures seem to go to the weird movies, so...

personally i think it's going to be hilarious this year. jon stewart is one of the funniest people to me. i'm actually watching the daily show right now and i'm laughing my arse off at the tribute to alan greenspan. its going to be an experience for him and its going to be interesting to watch. definatley going to be a different kind of humor this year.

i agree with you but with the money they have and the man behind it all jeesh and they have so many friends in the academy. don't get me wrong i think Munich is definitely a great movie i loved it i was on the edge of my seat. crash for what it was, touched me, and stayed with me, great ensemble cast. i still remember each character more than i do with Munich and i just saw it the end of last year.crash i saw that what, 5 or 6 months ago. both great movies MUNICH IN MY BOOK better all around but as for character acting CRASH by far.

I just saw Good Night and Good Luck last night. It was aight... Entertaining, but I felt like I was watching some History Channel re-enactment. For such a defining moment in American history, there is surprisingly little drama going on. Definitely not deserving of so many oscar nods. Maybe for cinematography, but that's about it. I think this is a case of a film getting nominations based on its politics.

That movie was pushed into theaters rushed and unfinished IMO - Great movie for sure, but they ran out of time for proper post work.
It's true that some of the post work looked unfinished, but I was disappointed this movie didn't get more recognition from the Academy. I admit, I can be a snob when it comes to fX films -- I'm usually the first to dismiss them when it comes to evaluating films. But, I was particularly moved by the love story in this version of Kong, and watching the Production Diaries I am very impressed by the way the set was run and by Peter Jackson in general. That said, I was pleased that the BestPic nominees were largely "indie" films (although, is it really an "indie" when it still has big money behind it???).
I'm behind Capote all the way -- mainly because I think Philip Seymour Hoffman is an awesome actor -- so flexible, so real, so genuine, so much integrity -- and because Truman Capote is one of my favorite writers. However, I had really high expectations when I went to see the film -- my fave actor playing my fave writer -- and as a result, was a tad disappointed. I just didn't get swept away like I wanted to. But it's beautifully filmed, languid, and great acting -- you really feel like you're seeing Truman Capote in the flesh.
I haven't yet seen Good Night..., Munich or Crash, but am hoping to do so before March 5.
One final thought on King Kong: I like Jack Black in general, but the whole movie I kept thinking his role was tailor-made for Philip Seymour Hoffman -- I could just totally picture him as the director. Has anyone heard any scuttlebut on whether he was considered for that role? I'm glad he made Capote instead, but he would have been great in that role.

the one thing i didn't like about "Capote" was how VERY VERY little the camera moved. It only had cuts and IMHO i think that films should have more camera movement than not. Other than that I loved the film. Hoffman was amazing and he really portrayed Capote very well.

Finally Saw "Capote"...
Never heard of the movie before, never heard of the writer either - went into the theatre without prior knowledge. I was pleasantly surprised.
?????? In Cold Blood...never heard of it? Man, do I feel old.

I haven't seen any of the best pic noms this year. First time since I can remember. They all just seem like so much work to go see. I'd frankly rather be entertained than preached to, though I will see "Capote" at some point.
Thinking back on the year, there weren't a lot of memorable fun movies though. "Serenity" was cool and fun, but flawed. "Virgin" was a hoot but needed an editor.
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was very well-done - it'd be in my top 5 of the year for sure.
