I wonder how many people just bombed and gave up after having a crew and all work hard on the peice.

I can't wait to watch the movies

Should we start guessing on which day the polls will open?

If they have to get all the entries before starting, I'm guessing it'll be sunday or monday at the earliest. If they open the voting realtime, it might be as soon as this weekend.

Darn this new technology and our inability to make reasonably wrong guesses.

I'll by a Sci-Fi DVD this time around. I'm expecting some prety good stuff, and then some half completed projects with cool stuff in them. So should be good all around.

I'm definitely looking forward to see all the entries... I'd guess this weekend would be the earliest we'd get to start viewing the entries.

I loved the Zombie DVD but Sci-Fi involves many more of the effects I am interested in learning how to do. I am excited to learn a lot from watching these movies and then buying the DVD!

I forgot all about the possible submitted special features for the DVD. I wonder if anyone was putting together little featurettes or things about the effects in their shorts. Cool.

I can't wait! I am currently working on the DVD version of our short, finishing up the end credits and stuff.

DAMNIT, I'M OUT! I'm just not going to make it. What I've written and shot simply doesn't qualify for the genre. I wish I could've shot my original script which WAS totally sci-fi. I really, really wanted to enter this contest. Damn, damn, damn!

Throw in a scene with a toy light sabre and call it Sci-fi.

Slice

Sci Fi does cover a very wide spectrum.

BrianV
01-31-2006, 03:18 PM
Yeah, really all it needs is a reference to technology and how it affects mankind and that is sci-fi. Aliens and spaceships need not be required.

But you're right. A toy lightsabre wouldn't hurt :)

EDIT: Not all scifi movies have to have technological commentary, but I just mean if it doesn't have anything else that is tell-tale scifi, then the most bare bones of scifi's can just have this and technically it qualifies. I don't think WE have technological commentary. Guess y'all will find out :)

How far off is it?Well, I came up with an idea that works dramatically, and I started shooting for it, but there is NO sci-fi element in it whatsoever. Plus I ditched my last available shoot day (today) so that I could perform an unplanned HVX shoot-out test at work. I've been trying all weekend to "inject" a sci-fi element into my short just so it will qualify, but when I cut it together, it just comes out super lame.

I really needed one more weekend day (light traffic to match previous footage) to shoot the much needed pick-ups (really, it's like ONLY three shots) that tie the whole story together, but unfortunately, I didn't come up with this story twist until Monday night. And without those pick-up shots, the story doesn't make ANY sense at all.

Wow! Thanks, Filmjunkie! I guess I will then. I just HATE not being part of the fun! I gotta try and make it somehow less lame now. I guess this is what the contest is all about. No matter what your excuses (think how good jdanstan's work was--and he had a HUGE excuse!), this is where the rubber really meets the road. When the deadline arrives, no matter what your excuse, you either have the goods or not.

UGH! Still rendering & creating FX at this very last moment, with hopefully a speed render to beat the clock. Got the score in and it ROCKS (GREAT job, Chris Rojas - RMI Studios!), BUT ... we got the final FX in yesterday morning and they blew worse than I could have imagined.

The MAIN FX element the guy created really grew on us (though we're dressing that up some as well), but the rest of it just sucked horribly. He was creating the stuff in Cinema 4D, but it looks like it was made in MS Paint. Just absolute crap. So we're having to do some last minute creations with Particle Illusion 3, and hope it all comps together as well as we're thinking it will.

I cut out of work today to finish this, and have been sitting in the same chair now for about 10 hours straight, with another 4 to go.
