i just used some old wheels and bearings on my dolly and they are quite noisy, and it picks up in the boom mic pretty good as well. and thats a big problem.
do you think i should just go buy a couple cheap kiddy skateboards and lube the bearings?? or fill the PVC pipes with that "great stuff" expanding foam to dampen the sound in addition to that?
any thoughts appreciated.

Depends on a lot of stuff. Are you using thick PVC? That can aid in sound dampening. I used wheels off of some old Rollerskates (not blades - skates... the 4-wheel kind) and they work fine. Abec-1 bearings (the cheapest ones) shouldn't even make any sound. As long at your dolly is sturdy, and you have barely decent bearings, and bearly decent wheels, and bearly decent PVC, you should be golden.
To shortcut: Larger PVC might help in this situation, although I'm not sure what the problem is thus far. I would use a minimum of 2" PVC piping.

The skate wheels/bearings from the el' cheapo skateboard are worthless..
This is what I used for my dolly (24 wheels on a 27 x 48" dolly.. )
Wheels: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7209533175&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
ABEC 7 Bearings: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7208098658&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
Oh yeah.. for the spacers I used regular skatebearing "spacers".. Just ask the guy that sells the items above and he'll sell them to you for $ .25/each..

One thing not mentioned yet is using furniture polish to get rid of a sqeek. I just replaced my wheels and although smooth they squeeked like crazy, a quick coat of furniture polish on the track and they didn't make a peep...
Best combo of wheels/bearings and I've seen them on proffessional shoots...Get the Bones Artistic 62mm 101a wheels coupled with Abec 7 bearings and your smooth like butter...I love 'em...

I actually ended up ordering 6 sets (for a total of 24) so I don't have an left over otherwise I would hook you up! The slam city skate guys will take care of you! Shoot them a PM and they'll accommodate your request.
True about the furniture cleaner... A little Pledge never hurts.

Absolutely
I can't tell you how many times a client has looked at my kit and asked why I have a bottle of Pledge amongst all the other grip gear.
It can be a lifesaver though.
