my theory:
there are four kind of groups of movie watching people.
1. mg1:
they watch any kind of films, and they do not have too much opinion about the film. (70% of the mw population)

2. mg2:
they watch films that are said to be good by them. they have hard opinion about everything, but really, they know nothing. (ie. some of the film-critcs. 25% of the mw pop) I hate this group, because they think they are cleverer than the following group.

3. mgu:
these people have already made a film. it could be any kind of film, but it has to be "watchable" they know a lot more about film making. I would put several profssionals into this group too. (4.5%)

4. m-master:
these people make the very good films, I mean not the movies, but the films. (0.5%)

what do you think?

I think there are two groups of people.

1. Those who feel you can split the general population up into groups.

2. Those who don't feel you can split the general population up into groups.

I guess I'm in the first group.

and I think, you have also split people into groups.

anyway, this is important, when you have to determine a film's direct audience

Demographics are important when marketing, true enough. But making a good film is more important. If it's good, and you work hard enough, you can FIND an audience.

But as an indie filmmaker it does help to know who your audience is beforehand. That's one of the first questions an investor or distributor will ask.

SO you just say "The idiots who will watch anything. Did you see the numbers for "BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE!"
