Chris Guest in Spinal Tap. LOL! For more of a stand-up comedian, I'd go with Chris Rock.

Fred Wolf. The man's a genius, but it's hard to find his material.
Denis Leary is also a favorite.

While I used to like Denis Leary I later found out that he ripped off Bill's act and even stole some of his material now I dont like him any more.:embarasse

Ripped off? I wasn't aware of that. They're similar, sure. I mean what chain smoking comedian wouldn't be compared to another chain smoking comedian?

Here you go krestofre dug this out from American Scream The Bill Hicks Story P157 "Colleen was coordinating the talent so she was standing backstage when she heard Leary doing material that was incredibly similar to old Hicks riffs, including his perennial Jim Fixx joke 'Keith Richards outlived Jim Fixx, the runner and health nut dude. The plot thickens'.
When Leary came offstage, Colleen said, more stunned than angry, 'Hey, you know that's Bill Hick's material! Do you know that's his material?' Leary stood there, stared at her without saying a word, and briskly left the dressing room.

I guess this is about stand-up comedians and I'm a little ashamed to admit this, but the other day I was flipiing channels and came across a movie with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin those guys were funny and very talented.
I find most of the stand-ups today very funny but not very talented or over the top full of themselves...

Richard Pryor was and still is.

Comedic actor, Steve Martin. Standup, one of the funnier sets I have seen is by an East Indian from Canada name of Russell Peters (http://www.helpms.ca/russellpeters.htm). Hilarious.
EDIT: After reading Justin, I have to also add The late Richard Pryor, and Eddie Murphy as well.

This is tough; so many great comics.
Loved Sam Kinison. Abbot & Costello and Mel Brooks made the best movies. Ellen DeGeneres is a riot. Garry Shandling. Ben Stiller in film is a treat.
Brian Regan is a comedian I always's enjoyed.

Recently one of the dvxuser's turned me on to Pablo Francisco. This guy is a current favorite.

But, I'd say Sarah Silverman is funny and maybe hottest little minx that's made me laugh. I'd say she is my favorite currently.

Okay, I can't remember the guy's name but he is Korean/American from Nashville. He has a Tennessee accent and a tremendous sense of humor. I've seen him a few times on shows from the Improv. Anyone remember his name? It might be Tommy something.

I'm a George Carlin guy. I'm also a huge fan of David Cross.
Hell yeah, Horse. I love Carlin and Cross. Although, after Carlin's last HBO special, it seems he's starting to lose his delivery a bit. He's gone so far to the dark side. His bitterness toward humanity is off the charts!

I used to like Carlin, too. But now he's just a constant rant and it gets old quick for me.

don't get me started on Martin and Lewis. Dean Martin is my idol and he HATED jerry lewis. yes they were funny and all but Martin absolutely hated Jerry Lewis. As much of a Dean Martin fan as I am I will NOT read Dean and Me because of what I've already stated many times DEAN MARIN HATED JERRY LEWIS! You might say that they "made up" when Sinatra brought them out on stage together but it was a publicity thing. Martin hated Lewis.
Now that I'm off that topic my favorite comedians are for standup, Robin Williams (the man is a genius) and Steve Martin. Also Dane Cook (some of his material not all of it). I don't know how you'd classify Jon Stewart and Steve Carell but I love their comedy. Jim Carrey and a slew of others as well. Those are my picks.
P.S. Why would you be ashamed to admit that you think Martin and Lewis are funny? I think they're hilarious and loved their comedy routines TOGETHER. Personally I hate Jerry Lewis. To me he's just an idiot. I can't stand the man at all. I do not like him. (I support his telethon thing though cause it's a good cause.) But to me I do not like him at all.

I saw Lewis Black live, if you think he's funny on T.V. hes way better live..

The funniest comedian I ever saw live was....JAY LENO! Back around '85, long before his Tonight Show days. He did a one and half hour show and I laughed until I though my cheeks would fall off.

I'm gonna go with Dane Cook, Mitch Hedberg, Dave Chappele, and The Amazing Jonathan

I gotta say Jarred Land...
Wait, commedian, not Canadian?
Then most for stand up Lewis Black (just got turned onto him) or pre-sobriety George Carlin and actor in commedy role, as much as Ben Affleck made me laugh in Pearl Harbor, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Leslie Neilson

I was getting worried when I scrolled and didn't see one Mitch Hedberg on the list.
He is one of the funniest standups I've ever heard, and he has the most simplistic jokes I've ever heard. He was definately an original in style and delivery. It's a damn shame he died as young as he did; he was obviously tormented, but it just seems like a drag that so many great people succumb to drugs.
Also, Dane Cook is great just for the fervor he has for his craft. He loves stand up, and he does it fairly well.
I'm fairly new to standup, so i haven't listened to the classics. Hence, all the newer standups. I also enjoy Pablo Francisco greatly. He gets tiring after a while, but he's great for a bit.

Mitch has been mentioned a lot now... and I agree... what a freakin' bummer. I remember the first time he was on David Letterman... at first I thought, "who the F is this guy?" Half the delivery was with his eyes closed! Within about a minute I was crying from laughing so hard.
David Cross is superb. Pablo is gonna' be one of the best ever if he stays on course.
I miss Steven Wright... every joke from him was one-liner genius... he was like a Far Side book... by the third joke you couldn't stop laughing.
This is the face of comedy.
