Just curious as to how much your budget ended up being for your sci-fi shorts. I spent about $150 dollars. That includes food, props, makeup, etc.
I spent right at $150 as well. $60 of that was for one lunch with my producer and producer/star.
I'm under $50 for mine. I have free access to 2 dvx100a's, a sennheiser me66, an editing station, and my homebuilt boom pole, so the money gets burned on food and gas.
My writing generally leans toward philosophical pieces or comedy, and they both have very modular components, so I end up writing for the places and things I can get free or cheap.

I'm around $600. But budget doesn't always translate to quality.

We're around $750...I haven't really done the final tally yet.

Around a hundred or so. Unless you count the days I took off from work for it. That bumps it up quite a bit.

Yeah, I tried to not do that this time around (took three days off for the last short I did). I shot at night, and then one day on the weekend. It was way tougher to schedule, but I didn't miss work.

I did maybe $60 or so dollars. One jumpsuit form walmart, tapes, $5 for my score composer, gas, food, an answering machine, and a few other things. Pretty cost effective if I do say so myself.

$5 for my score composer
Who writes a score for $5? Did you just buy him lunch or something?

I figure a dollar a minute is more than appropriate.
He also threatened to make the score completely synth. So I figure I’m paying what’s worth.

I guessed 600 but I came in around 500
Mostly on a homemade western dolly I needed for two shots.
The rest on wardrobe, props and White Castles.

I can't even keep track any more of how much I spend. My poor fiance. I bought a bogen 503 fluid head that i had saturday overnighted along with 5 mq tapes. I built a steady cam, bought a head cleaning unit.
Also, bought food and drinks for my talent:
Diet decaffinated pepsi for the male star
Syrah wine for the female star
Coke + Beer for the crew
2 Pizzas + fritos
And a 24 pack of bottled water.
(thats all just the first day)
I bought a ton of stuff to make a green screen with...
I seriously can't even keep track. Plus how many hours did i spend begging to get ahold of my lighting setup. Mudder of gad, I cry on the inside :(
And I have 4 days to finish this in. However, I figure if I finish it in 4 days, imagine what I could do if i really spent the 3 months working on it.

$50 for props
$300 for decent mpeg-2 encoding software
Satisfaction of finished project (when it's actually done!) - priceless

We spent about $400. $200 of that was for renting a car to get the crew and gear to the location for the first shoot. But it just so happened that we got booted out of the location that weekend! The second time the location gave us only 2 hours to shoot the principal photography but we managed to pull it off!

Nice, you probably have the lowest budget here! My last short (and first one) I spent $85. I thought that was cheap! $0, you've got it down!

Yeah, same. And actually, I made money while shooting mine. Because I've been shooting while I'm on the clock at work. Heh heh.
