Unfortunately, that thread was closed. I'm hoping that we can have a constructive conversation about this film. People just need to grow up.
How can anyone remotely interested in film pass this one up?--Directed by Ang Lee, Shot by Rodrigo Pierto, Written by Larry McMurtry....I just don't understand.

As long as people just state their opinion regarding the film, keep the conversation mature, and do not dive into personal attacks then in my opinion there is no problem discussing this film.
Personally, as I have said in the past, I loved this film. I thought that it was one of the most natural and organic things I have ever seen. Furthermore, I think it was THE best love story I have ever seen unfold on the screen. There was something about how the silence spoke louder than the words that just conveyed this entire sense of emotion and power. By far the best film of 2004 in my opinion.

Sounds like your describing New World for a second there Yankee. I still haven't gone to see this yet but will certainly try this weekend.
By the way the reasons you give for Brokeback are some of the reasons i love New World.

I think the cast is interesting but the movie appears not to be. The love story seem to be the kind of film where you get the point just by watching the trailer.
I wonder if there is anything more to it.... Is the moral and the story as apparant as it seems?
Man loves man, wives get hurt, man who love man cant get man due to society's views, man and man split up and get hurt... story ends.. no hope ... blah blah..
Personally I feel there are much more interesting and movies out there...
Think I will skip this till I can see it on Tv..

This falls into the category of "real" movies -- which to me are movies primarily concerned with story & character and which are told in a masterful manner.
Recent examples for me also include "The Squid & The Whale" and "Good Night & Good Luck."
So, yes this is a film worth the attention of folks who are interested in "real" movies -- as opposed to the FX-driven extravaganza genre.
And no the trailer does NOT give it all away -- not by a long shot.

NEW WORLD was nothing spectacular as far as a love story is concerned. the cinematography was great.
i hope to get a chance to see brokeback mountain in the next few days.

Incidentally, a couple of extras in the New World were in a short I made last year. I almost want to ruin their careers by putting it on their imdb pages... ha.
Anyway, I saw brokeback and thought it was pretty good. It was organic, like someone else said, but otherwise not that technically interesting to look at (except that one shot that's like a pov through some binocs). The thing I liked the most about the movie was the acting. I really was stunned by everyone's performances, considering what they'd done in the past. Also, I kept thinking it would end, but it wouldn't. Not saying that it was too long, because it might very well be, but there were certain cues that suggested to me that the story was done, but then it kept on going.
otherwise, good, solid story that doesn't rely on a twist ending. nice.

My problem with this is your stating it as a fact rather than an opinion. An opinion i completely disagree with. I felt that New World ran the gamut of human emotion in a compelling way. The fact that it was able to accomplish this with such little dialogue (not counting the voiceover which i feel is a detriment but one i was able to overlook because sometimes the images are more important than the words) is a triumph on the part of Malick (of whom I am not a fan, this is the first work of his i have ever liked). If film is a visual medium then New World embraces this medium and utilizes it in a way to tell its story like few films i can recall.
I've heard complaints about the pacing but IMO i feel they are unfounded. This isnt a simple romance told over the course of a few days, weeks, or months. This story spans years and encompasses the beauty and complexity of love in a way i did not think was possible.
I did not expect much from New World but what I got was one of the most inspiring cinematic experiences in my life.
It reached out to me and i connected with it on a personal level.

To bring it back around and to also throw a word of caution to this thread I think that Brokeback Mountain is an amazing film. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of movies. Personally I'm not a western fan, an afficienado of gay cinema, or a huge proponent of hidden agendas in films. All that being said, this is a movie that sits with you for days after you see it. It is not a love story about two cowboys, and I know that is how things are being presented. It is simply a love story.
That being said, I think it is insane for someone to demand that people see a movie (not that anyone has done that) or for people to argue over why someone may not want to see this. I never saw War of the Worlds in theatres, does that mean that I'm xenophobic or I have something against scientologists? Nope.
I truly belive that if you are interested in cinema this is a great film to see in the theatre or at the very least, worthy of a rental. For me, having seen it twice now, it has changed the way I view filmmaking, story telling, sound acquisition, and an actors role in a piece. My writing style has changed since I saw this film (yes, I still ramble in my posts, so what?). For me, this has been one of the most influential films I've ever seen.
That all being said, if you want to see it, go see it. If you are on the fence, go see it. If you have no interest, that's your right.
By far the best film of 2004 in my opinion.I think the Academy awarded that to Million Dollar Baby. Now for '05...
Still haven't seen it, but definitely want to.

I just saw this movie...I thought it was pretty good. My favorite part about it was how well they used "time" to tell the story...like this story was like a total of 10 years...istead of like 4 days and then at the very end a scene or two 19 years later. Like like movies where you see people involve over long periods of time.
However I didn't think they did a very good job of showing age between the two characters. They looked the same throughout the whole movie except maybe some facial hair.
Also another thing that I noticed that kinda made me feel weird was ..how do I explain this...
well from how I grew up seeing...gay men are kinda very feminite..and some but not all you know have that distint gay voice. But with these two characters...they are two hard asses that grew up on a farm and are very man like. I mean if you met them..you would be like, "no way is that guy gay. I'm prolly more gay than that guy." Most people like that are very anti-gay..and it was just weird seeing these two types of people have a relationship...it just didn't make sense in my mind which made it weird...but it was still very well done...hope I explained that right.

You're describing a stereotype.
It felt weird because these two didn't fit into that stereotype you were raised with.

I saw it, and liked it.
Sure there is the whole "issue" of the guys being gay, but when its all said and done its just a character study of sorts. They created two characters and this is what happened, its a very interesting look at a relationship that isn't accepted by social circles.
The acting was great, the cinematography took a backseat, and in a story like this, its was fine. Ang Lee is good at making the most of his characters and actors. Given a proper script and genre he soars, like he did here.
This is a very simple touching story about two people. Whether or not you agree with their relationship, you should at least be able to identify with their heartbreak.
Does anyone else thing that Ang Lee was the wrong guy to make Hulk?

I haven't seen this movie but I'm assuming the two characters are bisexual, not gay. Sexuality is a huge spectrum, from one end to the other and anywhere in between. Bisexuals, male or female, usually come across as straight as they are "middle of the road" -- bisexual males are not overly feminine, bisexual women are not overly masculine. If you didn't know, you would assume they were straight -- by their mannerisms and speaking with them. Gaydar (bi-dar) does not work that well on bisexuals. The blending of masculinity and feminity makes it harder to guess their sexuality. Gays stand out because on the sexuality spectrum they are usually (not always) way over onto the feminine side; Lesbians stand out as they may be well over onto the masculine side.

I recently saw this movie a few days ago, and I did go into this thing with high expectations after hearing the great comments about the film, and in my opinion, it wasnt as great as everyones saying it was. It wasnt bad, but people have said its amazingly great and that it teaches alot, etc. It was just average for me. Average cinematography, average acting, and it was a little long. I dont hate long movies, I ve seen longer and not gotten bored at all, but the story was just very slow. There were some amazing shots of the mountains and nature, but it didnt blow me away. Had some good scenes, but... not what its cracked up to be.

I completely agree with Peeples here. I saw it with expectations in line with the press it was getting. And I just didnt come away that impressed. It was long, the story was slow, the cinematography bored me to distraction, and I guess worst of all...I didnt think the relationship between Jack and Innis was believable. Not in the way it played out at the beginning.
Overall a disappointment for me.
