As of now, January 25, these are the bulk of NL Editors available which support editing (but in many cases lagging color correction and image manipulation) of 2K and 4K files that I can think of:

Avid DS Nitris
Discreet Smoke
Discreet Fire
Quantel iQ
Quantel eQ
Assimilate

These can be considered as online finishing systems for DPX and HSDL files, but I'm not sure if these are to be adapted by the RED camera, since these formats are generated currently thru a digital intermediate process.

With such high-end systems, I'm wondering if, how, and when NLE systems will begin to adapt to the RED camera. And perhaps, as a projection, the offline to online process will be maintained, and people using RED in the future can edit via offline systems such as Avid Media Composer, FCP, etc. If the RED camera is truly revolutionary, then I think its most revolutionary idea will be its price, and if NLEs cannot offer a similar bargain upon its release, then what?

Also, any other hardware-based editors out there with 2k/4k support?

...and if NLEs cannot offer a similar bargain upon its release, then what?

Then we will just have to "settle" for an affordable, tapeless, interchangeable lens, variable framerate, multi-bitrate, 720/1080p camera. Seriously, at this point we shouldn't even be worried about the 4k capabilities, and if you MUST have 4k right now then you MUST be in a situation where you are able to purchase expensive hardware solutions that can handle it.

It would not be too expencive to recode or modify existing NLEs to handle 2k or 4k, but given the massive amounts of data involved the computing hardware is outside the reach of mere mortals. As amatter of fact there are even no monitors in existance that could show 4k material.

Those who really need 4k systems do not visit this board...

Goldyprog, the DVS Clipster should be included on your list.

that's why i'm thinking the offline to online process will be in place for quite a long time, and will benefit in the future in the motion picture industry, unless a contender steps in and brings an NLE perfectly or nearly-perfectly complementing all of RED's capabilities.

Greg, sorry I didn't mention that NLE, I'll have to check that out! Please mention if there are others out there as well.

Premiere Pro 2 also has support for 4K resolution as well as 2K.

FCP works on video up to 4000x4000 pixels. The decklink cards support 2k.

Has anyone ever successfully used FCP at 4K? I would doubt it, but I'd be pleased to be corrected.

FCP probably will support 4K after the summer, though.

Or FC Extreme, if you listen to ThinkSecret
