Steven Soderburgh will release his new movie, Bubble, on HDNET on Jan. 27. This is the same time it is released in theatres. Soon after it will be released on DVD. The movie looks like a boring independant film. It was shot on HD with untrained actors.

I bought this a few days ago and have watched it twice since. I think its a really great film. Its so well done that watching it you feel like your witnessing real events. I worked in a factory job for awhile and this really captures what its like to be in a dead end occupation like that.
The actors were all real people from some small town in ohio....(i live in a small town in ohio too....) In the film the way they talk...and later, thier reactions to certain events are so realistic its crazy.
Soderbergs directing in this is basically just setting up two cameras and never moving them....just letting the actors dialog take over. The only camera movements he does do are just tripod panning shots of cars driving by.
I really dont think hes lying when he said they only used availible light....it looks it...but somehow its still good.
If anything.... this proves that a story is all you need to make a good film. Soderberg is basically taunting us.....he can do anything he wants but hes proving that you can use any tools....no matter how cheap to make something great. I know he used a Sony 950 or whatever...but its not a big difference at all from a DVX on a normal TV screen. Many times with the bad lighting it looks like a camera far lower in quality than the DVX.
Anyway...it was inspiring and encouraging to me as a dv filmmaker.
I highly recommend watching it.
I guess he's making 5 more of these movies in the same working style. Should be interesting.

Weston,
thanks alot for your comments. I saw this sitting on the shelf and wanted to get it just cause of the history of it all and Soderberg directing, but I held off cause I hate buying something I haven't seen. After your words I know now that its something I can buy blind.

Just watched Bubble and loved it. Great performances, beautiful images, haunting story.
And the DVD extras are terrific as well; Soderbergh and Mark Romanek's commentary track provides a lot of insights into both the tech aspects and about working with non-professional actors, and the lengthy casting session interviews with the actors are interesting.

I had just the opposite reaction-- it's hard to make a 70 minute movie feel like it takes 3 hours to watch... but damned if Soderbergh didn't pull it off! Slow, plodding, etc.
I applaud him for experimenting with release windows, don't get me wrong... I just didn't actually like the film itself.

A very interesting movie. I was intrigued the whole way through. Never lost interest. So that says something. But a couple of things bothered me. The main actor was freaking terrible. I mean having 'real people' bring reality to acting is one thing. But not if the acting is terrible. I mean he mumbles more than Heath Ledger. Maybe he'll be in Brokeback 2 - The Tale Of The Mumblers
The second thing is -- big spoilers -- I felt like they explored the less interesting side of the story. The large woman was really good and I found her semi-fascination with the boy something you've never seen before (in that an unnatractive older woman is obsessed with a younger guy). I wish they would've played out this dynamic more before killing off the young girl. The reveal of who the younger girl is going out with in the babysitting scene is priceless. I thought that would be just the beginning of this three-way triangle. But alas, it's over 5 minutes later.

HAHA. nice. I'm watching it now. It is interesting but something nags me... maybe its just so realistic, i feel like i'm there with these people. I can't help but to think that it sorta feels like a reality show despite the fact that its supposed to be realistic. even the shots and the sound quality. I'd expected better even for this kind of movie.
the story gets to you though.
I'm halfway through and I hate it.
Tell me it pays off cause right now I'm bored to tears.

It's strange they released this film everywhere and in everyway , but It hasn't made it to Canada.
I just finished watching it....
All I can say is, I hate this movie and I wish I could get the time I wasted back.
If you haven't seen this, don't bother.
It's extremelt boring.

<<<<<<<<<SPOILERS>>>>>>>
the eyes on the dead girl moved...
and...
why such delibrate cheap approach on the text? it makes me feel stupid when i watch it.
What was the point in making this film at all?
Dead girl's eyes aside, what was he trying to show us? Was he just having fun? I guess I can understand that but then just show it to your friends. Don't release it.

it was facinating to a point. then again, without the idea of using non-actors, candid-cinema look, a bold distribution technique, it wouldn't have gotten too far - not that it has.

I thought it was fascinating to watch once, but I don't want to see it again. Actually, I did watch it a second time with the commentary from Soderbergh and Romanek. That was pretty fascinating as well. If you start to wtach it and hate it, I'd recommend just starting over and watch it with the commentary. Even if you hate the movie, the commentary is pretty interesting as a filmmaker.
