After a hiatus of a few years it looks like P. T. Anderson is on track to create his next opus. I for one am a big fan of Anderson's films. Well the first three at least. I have issues with Punch-Drunk. I'm looking forward to this "period" piece.

I had also heard rumors he was phantom directing Robert Altman's next film as a result of Altman's ailing health. Anyone else hear this?

Finally....
Punchdrunk-love was disappointing, but Boogie Nights is fantastic.
Hard Eight.... now thats a modern noir that I love.

I heard about this today at another site, It sounds interesting.

About Anderson phantom directing Altman's new film I also heard about, but I would say that he only was there to aide the actors in Altman's appstens.

Thanks for the link. I love P.T. Anderson's first three films. After watching "Punch Drunk..." for the third time, I still can't decide if it's genius or garbage. I hope his new flic won't put me in a similar quandary.

Am I the only one who loved Punch Drunk Love?
wow - I'm starting to feel like a leper.
All my friends hated it, and personally I think it's incredible.

Actually I thought I was the only one who didn't like it.

Back in school there was not a professor or fellow film student who didn't adore that movie. I felt like the leper but this thread has been like a searing hot needle treatment to my tattered remnants of flesh.

Don't get me wrong, Punch-drunk love was def. good, it just wasn't what I expected out of PTA.
His three films prior were absolute masterpieces of dark drama, character, and interweaving storylines. And Punch-drunk love was a complete 180.
But, maybe I need to watch it again.

To be honest I'm not sure what it is about the story of Punch Drunk that bothers me.

I guess i don't buy the romance, nor do i like how the "conflict" wraps up.

Technically though i think it was probably the best shot movie that year. Cinematography and implementation of color schemes was amazing. A beautiful movie.

Boogie Nights was such a success... but almost a decade ago... why was he laying low?

laying low? It's only been about four years. Maybe he's been taking time off. There have been longer hiatuses. And from what I gather he has been doing a few low-key things the Robert Altman film among them (which is actually listed on his IMDB page as a stand-by director).

And since Boogie Nights we've had Magnolia and Punch Drunk.

Magnolia alone should be enough to buy him a decade of relaxation.

It's interesting that Hard Eight isn't listed on his IMDB page anywhere...ponderous.

Edit * My mistake it's listed under Sydney.

It appears the novel this next film is based on is Upton Sinclair's "Oil!" I have only ever read two of Sinclair's novels The Jungle and Boston. Both were very critical of society and the machinations of controlling parties. Given the nature of current affairs this could be an interesting foray into political/social commentary for Anderson. Getting really excited for this one...

I am so happy to hear this. I think that PT is the greatest american filmmaker right now.

Boogie nights kills me every time
Magnolia...frogs man...the frog scene!!!
Punch drunk...amazing score & brilliant take on boy meets girl

As far as his break is concerned. I'm curious too. I had assumed it was a result of too much "director's powder".

Not only did I love it, but it is, by far, my favorite Adam Sandler performance (Spanglish is second).

That is a bold statement. He is definitely one of the directors I track. I've been wondering what the hell was going on with him.

Rook, is this director's powder commercially available?

I just watched Magnolia again.

I'm inclined to agree with Rook. Not the greatest but he is definately up there so long as this next flick isn't a total dissappointment. Time will Tell...

.....And it just so happens i have a large stock of director's powder. I keep it in my warehouse next to the bridge and 10 cases of discontinued Love Potion No. 9
