I know it's for real, but I still have this picture of you standing there with a massive sign saying "SUCKERS!"

Seriously though, I wish I could be there but an 11 hour flight is too much!

Yeah, April I will be on the olympic peninsula shooting. Im sure there will be enough posts on here to cover all of it.

how much does NAB cost, approx?

I don't see how a non-functional prototype is going to force anyone to put their foot in their mouth. We all know about Oakley's god-like abilities at forging synthetic shells, what we have no past experience with is their electronics.

What else are you going to have to offer in April? Mysterium captures? An ugly little functional prototype?

Hey Jim, Look forward to seeing you at NAB this year. April is not that far away. Any who do you think you guys will be doing kind of a special presentation for DVX User. Kind of what Panasonic did last year with the HVX? If so that would be awesome

1st... Oakley has successfully released three electronics products in the last year, the latest with Motorola as the marketing partner. They weren't afraid. 2nd, Oakley is not the company producing the RED camera, althoiugh much of the team is helping. 3rd, your skepticism might dip when you find out who else is on the RED team. 4th, are you really expecting the prototype to be ugly?

I, for one, am looking forward to the NAB announcement. I hope I can be there, but if not will be sitting in front of my computer anxiously awaiting the first post from someone who is there.

I just want to know how to get on the preorder list. :-)

I'm just responding to the rationales given to trust the RED project. I don't doubt I'll have a RED camera sitting on my desk 12 months from now, if they deliver by then. I just don't see how a hollow polycarbon shell will aleve any concerns in April. As the line goes, the proof is in the pudding.

My question is, will there be "pudding" at NAB? Prototype imager captures? A functioning lab prototype (and yes engineering prototypes are notoriously ugly ;))? Footage in the beta codecs? Or do we have to wait until July for all of these things?

Will we be getting anything of substance beyond promises at NAB? It sounds like you have a great team, and the drive to succeed. But at this point, from a consumer standpoint, I can't get hyped about spread sheets and press releases. The sooner we can see some real mysterium footage captures, even if they're grainy and awful to start with, the sooner we feel like we're part of the process, united in the RED cause. Something to rally behind. Speaking of which... is red looking for any interns? :cheesy:

Yeah, all you're missing is insulting the guy's mother, and you're set for Senior VP at RED!

But seriously, skepticism is not a bad thing. We can't just blindly follow a cause without truly understanding it. All we have now are tidbits of information; nothing more. The non-working prototype will be a BIG step, though. As long as it's not made of matchbook covers and duct-tape, it shows that there's a real company that is working on a real product.

How long did it take Panasonic to show footage of the HVX?

I won't be there at NAB in April, but you can bet I'll be glued to my computer the minute people can start sending info and pictures of the thing!

I'm just saying anybody can build a shell, it could be beautiful, it could be ugly but it doesn't matter to me, because cameras have the unique advantage of (with the exception of mirrors) consistently staying out of view on film. What matters is what ends up on my Hard Drive at the end of the day.

I would rather their entire booth was a stack of red CDs with a single frame capture on it than a non-working prototype. Obviously where they are at in development will dictate the feasibility of that.

What's the point of a forum if you don't ask the hard questions? I can ask myself "I wonder how splendid the footage will look." Forums are for asking "So just how splendid does the footage look?"

p.s. I payed no attention to the HVX until November, when there were rumors I might see something out of it. I'm breaking my normal reservations on the RED just out of damned curiosity and interest.

jannard announced the Red too early.

so did panasonic with the HVX, what's your point?

this RED idea is a great one. if you had all the money and resources in the world to custom build a camera that Met_Your_Exact_Requirements with easy to use post workflow, etc.

....

Then, why not try to sell it to others to re-coup your development costs... Heck, why not try to build a new empire with your idea?

That's the point. The inventor gets a free camera along the way paid for by the thousands of other people who want the same thing. Brilliant.

Or, put another way, RED is a clever way of using other people's money to get what you want. This man wants a Digital Cinema Camera he can use with Final Cut Pro. Arri doesn't offer that...

Apple's already announced support. Apple and Red are at least talking quite a bit...

Michael Summers

im not saying he announced it too early because it wont come to fruitation for a while, but because all of these kids nagging him are just to going increase in number and it may become overwhelming for the company to deal with it so early in development.

I think he's using the same strategy he used to market the original Oakley products: Grassroots Marketing. What better place to create a buzzing than filmmaker forums on the internet? I think we could all learn a few things about marketing from him. (even though I hate the idea of having my own website...)
