View Full Version : Guy Ritchie's next

Saw Guy Ritchie's next movie Revolver tonight.

It was quite a departure. I don't want to give anything away or taint anyone's opinions ahead of time so I won't say anything more about it than to say:

Do not expect another Lock Stock or Snatch. It is a different animal entirely. While still a gangster film it bears little resemblance in story to Ritchie's previous films. I was really shocked. Perhaps when some more people have had a chance to catch it we can talk about it some, cause i have some pointed opinions on the subject.

You missed this (http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=28847&highlight=Revolver) thread. Have they not released it in US yet? Weird... I saw it in September and it's been out on DVD for a couple of months here.

I loved Snatch and Lock Stock - I had really high hopes on this one. But maybe your right...

You can't call him a hack yet. Lock, Stock and Snatch were fantastic. They were very close to perfect with a huge rewatchability factor. The Cinematography was great and the editing was some of the tightest I've seen.

Richie + Madonna = HACK perhaps.

Richie + Madonna = HACK perhaps.

Funny - She is/was smart enough to generate an amazingly successful career for 25 years... But may have hurt Ritchie's....

I liked Lock,Stock but didn't really care for Snatch. Haven't seen Revolver.

same here, liked "LS,TSB", disliked Snatch. Wasnt too hyped about Revolver, but was interested (especially since it shares my short's name). I feel fine skipping it now.

Revolver is on a different level. It's very abstract. Still a gangster movie but like a gangster movie with elements of I heart Huckabees and Fight Club.

I personally did not care for this at all. Rubbed me the wrong way. I like Lock Stock and Snatch but would not go so far as to call them close to perfect. Thats a very strong combination of words.

Ya, hard to explain, but same here.... I found myself actually annoyed at times....

Story, photography, lighting, art direction, character developement, editing...I was down for the whole thing on both. Next to perfect means I walk away from the movie wanting to see it again. I want the DVD the day it comes out. The movies which move on to your favorites list with the classics that have been with you for years. I like English flicks. I like the honesty of character. Movies like "I went down".

Well then for you they are close to perfect. Me, well people just have different sensibilities. I did enjoy both greatly. They were alot of fun.

It was different and it was utter tripe the narrative was highly flawed(possibly due to the studio cuts) and i thought it was highly pretentious. It was trying to come across as an existential piece, however the execution of it was massively flawed. Great photography though.

both snatch and lock stock were decent. The trailer for this looks good. I'm glad to hear it's different than those two movies. Why remake the same movie?

Guy Ritchie is a wannabe Tarantino.

I have only seen parts of LOCK,STOCK and have seen SNATCH and really was'nt impressed.

What's the hype ?

Actually, I thought LS&TSB was a good movie. It didn't feel like Tarantino. I didn't care for Snatch. The new one? I won't go to the theater to see it.

The Machinist

Hey Hudson good catch.

Don't forget the random shots of Jap Anime-ish cartoons spliced in between 'real' footage. I instantly thought of Kill Bill.

I'd make some nice picture comparisons but I'm feeling pretty lazy.

He is/was so not a Tarantino wannabe. I thought his approach to the whole crime thing was fresh and exciting. The picture above is from Revolver, right?
I really hope he hasn't become a Tarantino wannabe. Keep in mind that I've never seen another director steal so many shots from others as Tarantino. (Example; Jackie Brown with the airport dolly shot ripped right out of "The Graduate")

Filmjunkie677

Who doesn't "steal" shots in this day in age. Everything's been done. There is no "stealing" shots, anymore.

Uh oh, I stole a Two-shot. lol.
A CU. uh-oh.

Hey, I've heard that arguement before. I agree with it in part, but you know what I am saying. I'm here to defend the early works of Richie. Don't get me wrong on QT. He's cool. I didn't much care for him for a few years there, until I saw Kill Bill 2. It brought me back around.
I like old Richie better. His characters seem like they have to less to prove. I see QT and GR as similar in interest, but that is far as I will go.

If Ritchie is a tarantino wannabe then tarantino must be an amalgamation of all the great directors who he has stolen from. Tarantino is the bastard child of cinema.

... tarantino must be an amalgamation of all the great directors who he has stolen from. ....

QT is the first to admit he "borrows" junk he has seen before. He's basically a massive movie lover who pays tribute to stuff he's enjoyed over the years.

But still.... The dude is still pretty bloody good at making flicks! One thing to copy work, another to do it amazingly.

His writing is what makes him one of the greats.

Also, he is one hell of a caster.

Tarantino is the most exciting filmmaker working. His films are events; even SS can't claim that

QT is a great writer, great caster and a great director.

Just saw Revolver. Don't waste your time. It is atrocious -- very low concepts poorly executed.

The Machinist

Precisely.

I distinctly got the feeling that Ritchie was trying to take the london crime genre thing to a whole new level.

I was very dissappointed and put off by the whole thing.
