Or you could just go with one of these. Make sure you get a nice Hasselblad 645 to go with it though :)

Well who knows, he could have just won the lottery hence the sudden interest in a digital camera :) but I see your point, in that case Canon Rebel XT. I've had one for 6 months now, and love it to death.

I have a D70 and I think it's... DA BOMB!!! (Didn't know about the D70s until after I bought my D70)
Alot of people are going to tell you to wait for all those new 10-12 megapixel cameras coming out sometime this year. But I say just get it. It's got ISO, fstop, shutter speed and flash just like an analog camera. I've printed out images over 2 feet wide and saw no pixelation. They say the 20D is better for action sports photography... but hell.. I'm happy with it.

Get the D70s, some lenses, and a speedlight SB-800 and you're good to go.

I would have gotten the 20D, but there were 2 factors which were key 2 me.
1) price. I already have Nikon Lenses. So I didn't want to drop another $1200 in Canon lenses.

2) On/off is not instant on a 20D. Takes a few seconds for it to get ready. (at least the 20D that I used) The D70 was instant and I have to be ready to catch unexpected stuff.

I would say current lenses should probably be the larges factor in selecting camera brand. Most of these cameras will give you very similar performance, untill you start getting up to the 5d with a full frame 12MP sensor, but if you have a bunch of nikon lenses already, I would seriously consider the D200. As far as the 20D taking a few seconds to get ready, that really shouldn't be, it has a startup time of less than a second.

We have a D70 and liked it so much we bought the D70s for a backup. We use and sc-29 to attach them to a Custom flash bracket and fire SB-800 flashes. They are lightweight, sharp resolutioned, fast firing cameras and we use them for weddings and events. I am going to try to see the elusive new D200 next week at the "Imaging USA" show in Austin. We have prints that are of very high quality that are 20"X30" from these cameras. We are very happy with the low cost and the excellent results we have obtained. A full kit for events runs about $2500 and that is with a Quantum 2x turbo battery. We use a 2.8 70-200mm VR for our portraits and long shots, cost: $1500.

The D70 is an excellent camera. I recently upgraded to the D200 and much as I love it, I wouldn't recommed it to someone as there first camera. Higher resolution still cameras (also like the HVX) require more work to focus and is more difficult to get sharper images using 1/100 or less. This is just the nature of more pixels.

Hey Bob,
Seen your CG work. Great stuff.
As far as the D200, I was thinking about getting one by the end of Summer and using my D70 as a backup since I'm starting to do alot more fashion shows. Right now my backup is a coolpix 5700. But it does the job!

Was it worth the upgrade? Or would you have rather saved up for a Mark II if you had the time to save up for it?

It was great to really learn the ins and out of the D70 before I jumped over to the D200. The amount of customization of the D200 is really useful. I wouldn't ever switch over to Canon. I have too much investment in Nikon glass. Besides, Nikons just look cooler too. Ha Ha!

D200 + MB200
D70
70-200 2.8VR
18-70 3.5-4.5
85 1.8

I just got a D200 and I've had the D70s for awhile. I would just make the jump to the D200. But you would be real happy with a D70s.

i was looking at cameras recently: how about the panasonic lumix or the coolpix 8700 or 8800? or is it worth it to invest in an SLR camera instead?

The coolpix is a great camera.

You can even mount a speedlight onto them and get some fabulous stuff out of it.
I love my 5700. I believe the only big difference is the 8mp count on the 8700.

I have printed out 8x10's of these images and had no pixelation from my 5700.
Nice thing about those coolpixes, you don't need to buy lenses. The zoom is awesome for that little thing. The Coolpix has a native B&W mode too :)

Sorry for waiting to post so long in this thread. Thanks for ur suggestions everyone!!

I was wondering if you could attach a Nikon 50mm lens that goes on a 35mm camera onto a D70. Or are there special lens for the D70 that range in all those different depths of field?

You can use Nikon film lenses on the D70, or any Nikon Digital SLR.
