I was wondering about swearing. I know violence isn't a problem (I watched some of the zombie vids) but what about the occasional f-bomb? My piece really will suffer without the occasional carefully placed shoot and fork. Is there any official stipulation on this?

The official word is that it must fit within a standard MPAA R-Rated film. That's a little broad, but that's what BarryS has said in the past.

That is all my sci fi film will be, but it will be an alien saying "f**k" for 6 solid minutes, so its still sci fi.

Where is the line. Not that we are out to cross it.
I get the feeling that rated "R" can fly. Is "NC17" clear or is that too far?

It's a Sci-Fi contest. An R rating encompasses an awful lot. I have a hard time trying to figure out what could be put into it, requiring an NC17 rating, that could possibly make or break a 6 minute short.

Lately the MPAA has been pretty harsh on Male full-frontal. Is the DVX ratings board going to be like the MPAA and give 5th Element a PG-13 (swearing, violence, sex with a minor, nudity with a minor) and Amelie an R (Nudity with an Adult)?

Just kidding. Some guidelines would be nice. We edited ours down a bit to stay away from the nudey bits, and I think the piece is better for it, but it would be nice to know where our boundaries lay, if there are any at all.

I thought the R-rated thing was pretty clear, but essentially it means cursing and nudity are completely acceptable. I'm a lot more concerned with copyright violations, running time, and format. Jarred and I aren't looking to play censor. If you have anythiing like explicit sex--and I can't even fathom that in a 6 minute SciFi film--that is not acceptable. Your characters are free to dance around in their birthday suits and curse like sailors, but don't expect to get too many votes. :)

Absolutly not! You must add genetalia immediatly -- and rememeber he or she or he/she is an Alien - so be creative, things like multiple freely moving parts in a variety of colors are expected.

It's not required but having them curse like sailors is recommended as well.
