Thanks to Kaz Okamura for this example footage!

Man, this evening footage stuff looks clean!

The night clip and image shows the noise at +12dB.
It's about what I'd expect. The good news is the 0dB stuff
looks clean !, and the +6dB might be just good enough for some situations.

The night wmv file is anamorphic, apparently with no flag for 16:9.
It shows in a 4:3 window anamorphic. The QT version of this file is
OK, although does have some compression artifacts from the QT export.

The night shot looks VERY noisy. Based on this and other users comments, it seems like this camera does not handle low light levels very well. Everything else looks great though.

With all due respect, now that i'm looking at it on my 24", these files are hard to evaluate since they are highly compressed low data rate wmv and QT files.

I'd like to see some raw night footage with detail at -5 and gain at 0.

It won't be long.

Looks like Kaz Okamura is a Purdue grad!

Take a look at the full frame tif files to see the noise in the gained up night frames. I'd like to take a look at the MXF.

Yes +12dB is noisy as expected, maybe noiser than expected? I'm not sure.

0db looked OK, but it's hard to tell since the files are all highly compressed exports.

Great

Glad PC users are getting access to more material.

Why is it that the quicktime footage always looks really low in contrast compared to the WMV footage? I assume the WMV is correct as it looks exactly like one of the exported Tiffs. The quicktime looks desaturated and milky in comparison to the WMV.

Could be one reason why you guys are noticing more noise too, as the Black pedestal looks messed up after encoding. Look at the Tiff and compare to the quicktime - hell of a difference. Either that or my PC is mental.

Quicktime Player has some sort of gamma playback bug.... If you view the same quicktime clip in FinalCut, it'll playback with the proper gamma and look like it's supposed to.

man... that makes a HUGE difference. looks good to me now - even @ +12dB.

no wonder my H.264 web versions always looked washed out. hope Apple fixes this soon.

There are 3 files I found so far using the link listed in the quote. The quote link points to night03.tif I assume that the image is +12dB Gain. If so, night01 must be 0dB Gain and night02 is +6dB Gain.

Salam,

hello every body 'am new to this great forum as a writer but not as a reader!
and planning to get the HVX as most of you..

i wonder why there is a huge amount of difference in the clip qualities between what we see here and what we saw in the desert and bar clips, they looked very good but the other clips looked poor,.. i guess!!

were the desert and bar clips post-processed, they looked very sharp and clean !!!

Thanks,
Amr

The desert and bar clips were outdoor and/or well-lit clips. You typically see a lot more noise in the darker, low light areas of any camera.

Night clips, with no light or anything...
My only question, who pays 6K for a surveillance camera? :)

No seriously, this is bound to look noisy with a 1/3inch ccd camera. Unless you really give up latitude and/or colour. But then an infrared camera might do the trick... :)

that's because the desert footage was shot with a Cinealta, not an HVX

..and I know who did JFK in, PM for an answer..
