Is it true that 1080 24p will take up the exact same space that 720 24p will take up on a p2 card? If this is true isnt 1080P TWICE as compressed as 720?

No, that's not true at all.
1080 takes up 1 minute per gig, 720/60p takes up 1 minute per gig. Twice as many frames, half as many pixels, same amount of compression per pixel.
720/24p takes up less space because it has fewer frames.

right right - i always forget that 1080 25p is encoded in a 60i stream - that always trips me up
