Okay...let's assume for one moment that the HVX will not allow for a firewire HD stream from a NLE (PC or MAC) to play on the analog outs. So the ability to use it as a "breakout box" is not there. Now.....say you were editing on a PC laptop or a Powerbook with FCP. How would you be able to monitor your HD content on a dedicated HD monitor? I am not talking the laptop screen but a production monitor.

On a desktop system I know that you can get a dedicated card to handle this....but what is there for laptop? I have heard Barry mention that he has seen DVCPRO-HD being edited on a G4 powerbook but I am assuming that all monitoring was on the LCD of the laptop. Is there a portable equivalent to the KONA cards or Decklink, etc???

DVCPRO HD deck connected to fireport.

That HD deck would be nice but it's about 30k with everything. I was going to get the converter box thing. The title escapes me but it's by the same manufacturer I think that makes the Decklink card. It's a DVI to component interface. It is 650 bucks I believe. I'll do a search again and post back. I was going to get this after the camera arrives along with the Dell widescreen monitor.. which conventiently has both inputs.

Hope the vagueness helps.. but you are not SOL.

There it is. It's the hdlink interface or adapter thing. I do have a question about the HD SDI output and what's required.. etc. I'm probably going with the Dell to monitor on set and at the office atleast initially.. and then maybe a CRT and that 17 inch panasonic HD monitor looks sweet with the freeze frame.

What's gonna be the best solution.. and does the HDlink fit in nicely?

cheers

thats nice....but you still need a SDI output to convert to DVI input...so a deck or capture card is still required.
in other words...no this will not help when editing on a laptop or computer without a SDI output.

So this isn't bidirectional? Has to go from SDI to DVI? That stinks for sure if ya can't select which option you want.
