If affordable e-cinema is the goal why try to re-invent the wheel with a complete new camera system. Use of a 16mm size sensor could create a digital back that would clip onto a film camera like a magazine. built in mechanical shutter viewing, existing lenses, etc. Aaton Xtr, Arri SR, Eclair NPR and ACL all use magazines that could be swapped for a digital back with the sensor mounted at the gate. The Eclair NPR is probably the best choice for a prototype due to the size of the magazine mounting plate, also the cost of a complete package (16mm part, not electronic) would be affordable to most members of this forum.

Imagine being able to shoot film or digital with the same camera merely by swapping magazines. My old NPR gets better everytime kodak makes a new stock, If someone could make a digital back for it, that would be cool.

Joe Dunton showed something like that a few years ago, but that's the last I heard of it. Check out the link:

I don't think RED is re-inventing the wheel - instead they're inovating the video camera to a whole new level.... I think they've got some ideas up their sleaves that will be so innovative you can't just do them as a back to existing gear.
