Pretentious Artists!

[[[[[warning - looking back, this is a bit of a rant, and it takes sharp turns, but it maintains the topic - which is ofcourse my life going to an Arts Highschool - a center of arrogance for angsty teenage kids]]]]]

Especially ones that don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

Here's some advice assholes, "Shut the fuck up, you arrogant pricks and listen to the advice I'm trying to give you."

I'm currently a junior at an arts highschool - in the hellhole called Minnesota - this school is "special" meaning it's a public highschool funded by the state, but you have to try out to get in. So basically these kids get in, and all the sudden they all get big headed - it blows my mind.

Holy shit - you got into an arts highschool in america's toilet (Minnesota)! Congratufuckinglations asshat/s, now go fellate each other, because apparently that's the only reason you're here.

It wouldn't be so bad if these kids were talented, or knew what the fuck they were talking about - for example the school spent a good deal of it's precious funds buying these douchebag seniors hundreds of feet of 16mm reversal stock for their final project. I saw this going on - thought I'd be friendly -

Monte: Hey - what film stock you guys shooting on?

Bitchass Mofo: *arrogant tone* What did you say?

Monte: Uhhh

BM: Film stock is leftover film - get your definitions right- we bought new stuff - but we're shooting on 16...

Monte: Yah... well what kind of 16?

BM: 16mm film...?

Monte: Well - like is it the new kodak vision stuff or?

BM: You don't know what your talking about...

and that was the end of the conversation...

Makes me sad we're wasting tax payers money on these fuckers

This happens often - these kids are so fucking pretentious I'm seriously considering dropping out - but then what would I do?

I mean, really what would I do?

No bands in MN want to do Music videos, and as a "test" I posted an add in the craigslist for MN and then the same exact ad in the Bay area craigslist.

Guess which got me replies from talented bands?

But back to the topic - I really don't want to sound arrogant but 90% of these kids suck - there are a few good still photographers, and 2 good kids at photoshop in terms of graphic design -

Like seriously - am I that talented? I don't think so, I mean, I'm only 16 years of age - but how is it that everybody I've met in minnesota sucks so much ass? I really am not trying to come off as some "holier than thou" *artiste* but seriously - what the fuck?

Hell - even if people are interested - my age always seems to fuck everything up

For example a guy was talking to me a while ago cus he saw my work online - and he assumed this music video was shot on 16mm, so he was talking to me about hiring me to dp for a short he was doing - I told him it was video - and I told him it could cut down his costs considerably without losing TOO much quality... but then came the kicker:

John Doe: Wow... so anyways - how long have you been doing this stuff?

Monte: Well, I first picked up a camera about 3 years ago

JD: Oh - yah - so do you have a dayjob or?

Monte: Well actually I'm in school right now - I'm a junior at PCAE

JD: The highschool? You're shitting me?

Monte: Naw, I'm actually 16

---

Then it goes downhill from there...

----

It saddens me to be surrounded by all these fucktards at school though - I get along with a good portion of them, but the way they rip on each others work is just totally innapropriate - it's really quite vexing to be honest.

Another thing - that pisses the shit outta me - their reels are garbage yet they assume that if their parents pay for them to go to "film school" they'll be directing commercials/features/music videos for huge clients right out the door... and it really makes me sad that they all take themselves so seriously

I personally love to joke around - for example today - tackling and cutting the hair of my few buddies that are as "dumb" as me. Sure chasing people with scissors might not be the safest thing to do but jesus christ calm down.

While we were doing this, not 1, 2 or even 3 but 9 people proclaimed outloud how we were "childish" or "immature"

Ok, you're what... 16, 17 -- holy shit maybe even 18?! Jesus christ, SMILE ONCE IN A WHILE YOU FUCKTARD! I've never seen so many serious faces since I witnessed 9/11 godamn DONT TAKE YOURSELF SO SERIOUSLY YOU FUCKIN PRICKS

I know alot of you probably wondering where this is coming from - well I realized something - I must be some sort of oddity - an "auteur" that doesn't take himself seriously - hell, I do what I like, and I like what I do - if you want to call me an artist because of that, so be it, but if you don't respect yourself enough to have a little fun in life then maybe you should go blow your brains out right now.

It's really starting to get to me - when people do SMILE at me - it's one of the fellas that I regularly hang around or some chick who wants in my pants - people are so fucking superficial

Just because somebody finds me attractive all the sudden I'm, "so funny" "creative" and my work is the most amazing thing ever. Ok, do I have a sign taped to my chest that says stupid mother fucker?

Yes things could be worse in repsect to that last paragraph but still I like I'm wasting my time at this school - I'm just feeling really really really really unmotivated and completely emotionally drained from all this bullsh!t.

---

Another thing - when everybody first came there - they all dressed normally - but as time went on the whole school starting dressing differently, like it was some sort of contest to see who could be the "artsiest" and all of the sudden these kids stopped wearing preppy clothing and started making their own shit - only a handful of people stayed the same - but for the most part people were scrambling doing whatever they could to "fit in", thus ruining the old adage, "Just be yourself".

Hell atleast people there are straightforward and honest for the most part, for example:

Joe Blow: Hey I saw your music video from a link sent to me from [insert name]

Monte: Oh yea?

JB: Yah, it must be nice to have gear like that - if you could make that video imagine what *I* could do with that equipment.

Monte: (to self) *Oh you just would kill to have a worklight with 1 broken light, and a 60watt fill with a 1 days rental of a DVX, wow - all you need to do is muster up 200 bucks...*

JB: What's that?

--

I then proceed to argue with them that it's not gear but alas, it's too late. Now I know how McDermitt feels... (in reference to the backstreet boys video)

I mean - thanks alot prick, for your condescending know all attitude, it really empowers me - thanks for giving me premission to piss and shit - hell thanks for giving me the greenlight to breath your precious oxygen you fucking poser piece of shit.

I'm done

So - does anybody know of any *good* film programs for highschool age kids - preferably not one full of shit heads. Thanks

-

Ok guys - let the flames begin (*ducks*)

Feel your pain, Monte. I am afraid you won't find the 'adult' world much different...

The sooner you get over it, the better for you. Newton was wrong anyway - there is no gravity. It's all because Earth sucks (kidding, of course). Find an interesting project, a few friends whom you can trust, and everything will be alright.

I'd have to agree on that one my friend.

That being said- there are going to be assholes, thats a given. I graduated 3 years ago- i NEVER had the oppurtunity you have right now. We had media classes, basic ones- that got me started- but not a highschool 'film' class or whatever youre talking about. my advice to you? bit the bullet, put up with the pricks (they cant all be pricks) and get through it. There will be dickheads in life- no if's an's or but's. You've got to learn to deal with it. it isn't easy by any stretch.

you know what would shock these people? you're talented i'm sure- show them what you can do, and show them what you have that they dont. if they're assholes- 'nice' them to death. then when it comes time for a project- OWN them by doing something awesome.

good luck buddy. it doesnt get much easier- stick with it. it will get better.

Monte - I realize you're just venting among cyber-buddies, but I hope your negative attitude doesn't creep into your business dealings with people. If so, then it wouldn't matter how good you are or what age you are, nobody will want to hire you.

Don't let other's petty jealousies and insecurities deter your efforts to become the best toe-sucking cinematographer you can be. :)

youve bene in highschool for three years? and havnt caught onto this ruitine yet? its the same anywhere, not just your school. its worse over here on the north shore, a bunch untalented assshole TV class kids showered with hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment (5 pd170s, a dual 2 ghz g5, a pwerbook, 5 g5 imacs, and 3 professional sony studio cams,) have this huge fukin ego and put out SHI T. im all for an egotistical, big headed assshole of a filmmaker, but only if they put out GREAT fukking work. after i realized it, i left the class. i have my own equipment and dont need immature, untalented and egotistical bastards in my class. by the end of my last semester all i was doing was watching the itunes visualizer while being pretty "lucid" after a fun lunch period. probably the most fun part of the class.

XCheck - The adult world isn't different? Well all the post/editing houses I've hung out at here in Minneapolis everybody seemed to be atleast TALENTED :(

Zach - See thats the thing - 90% of the people that see my work that weren't being nice to me before suddenly become my "best friend" that's one of the things that makes me so mad, and ties in with my "superficial" point in my rant

Terry - I should hope not - I don't have a problem if I'm dealing with talented people that can have fun. But I'm amazed that I've been able to stay positive as long as I have, and continue to stay positive and "fun" in public...

Michael - The thing is that this is my first year at this school, and seeing as it's a school with an extremely competitive admissions program, you'd think the students would be the cream of the crop - but I guess Minnesota must be filled with no talent hacks because if this is the cream of the crop - then the crop must have been hit by a nuclear blast after God vomited all over it.

then they can't win. you say you hate how they are dicks to you, then when they're nice to you you're like 'they're superficial.' lighten up- you should be happy. maybe its some sort of initiation- you're green, maybe they want to feel you out. when you show your stuff, and they're nice to you, thats GOOD.

They should like me for who I am not for my work - thats when I call bullsh!t.

I am lightened up Zach, it's not necessarily me who they're primarily dicks to, although it does happen - but it's the people that they rip down that are trying to learn.

I don't care who you are, it's never appropriate to totally rip on somebodies piece that they spent hours upon hours on - which really isn't that bad - and who is just trying to learn just to boost your own ego.

I understand, guys, that this might be hard to grasp - this is definitely a totally different highschool experience - but I'm starting to long for the simpletons that just like to play catch and run laps and jump in the ole swimmin' hole.

Well if they are dicks they are dicks, but if someone sees something they can relate to in your work, whether it is the quality or the subject matter, then that alone doesn't make them a dick, but if they were before that then screw em.

If you do go and hang with the "simpletons" I wouldn't let them know that's what you think of them, they might get the wrong idea.

I'm sorry you are having a rough time, there has got to be someone at the school you can get along with though, good luck finding them.

Hey Monte,
First I want to applaud your perspective; you have already realized that just being in the special school doesn’t give you license to be poopy.
Second I want to assure you, it gets better! I haven’t even been doing this as long as you but I have had the opportunity to work with a number of professionals, and it’s great! People you can rely on to get their jobs done instead of coming up with excuses, it’s fantastic.

However, it looks like you’re falling into the trap of give a flying poopy poop poopmire about what other people think. You’re getting upset over what future Iron workers and burger flippers think. You don’t have time for that, who cares? You have access to equipment and, hopefully, expertise. Use it!, it sounds like you already are, and that’s great, don’t let the poophats slow you down. Learn everything there is to learn there, then move on and never look back. As Mark twain said; Don’t let school interfere with your education.

I felt the same way when I came up to St. Cloud to go to school. I'm a tv production major, but the major requires a minor (probably since it's one of the shortest majors here) so I figured I'd feel around and take a film class to see if I still wanted to do that.

Same people, just a few years older. People who are bitching and moaning about the boring cinematography in State and Main but not turning around and doing something they want to be proud of. I still remember the first day when the teacher put down films shot on video and then four or five students got into this discussion about how much it sucks.
I just shook my head and died a little inside.

On the plus side, now I can minor in something that doesn't make me want to jump in the fucking river and freeze to death.

Monte- feel your pain about poserdom. That's the world at large. Sooner you learn to see through it (which apparently you have) and, more importantly, how to go through, around or over people like this the better. Granted, they all end up as clients, but that's a different story.

As far as Minneapolis goes, you could be in a lot worse places. I know the production community has shrunk a bit up there in recent years, but it's still a ton better than a lot of places. Maybe you should try hooking up with a production company for some intern/pa stuff. The guys at Drive Thru are pretty cool. Granted, your outdoor shooting season is jack. Which makes me wonder why I'm going up to interview at Best Buy in a couple weeks. But, whatever. In the end, just shoot. Build your skills. If you're good, you're good. Some posers will always do well because posers hire posers, but plenty of people want the good stuff, too.

I being a fellow highschool filmmaker can feel your pain on alot of these things.

You are lucky though that you at least you have a special arts highschool. I live in New York and we don't have anything like that near me. I got to a regular public highschool and the only filmmaking courses i got were communications and media productions. We have tech teachers who are nice and mean well but arent all that knowledgable about filmmaking(they ask me questions not the other way around). And I'm one of the only serious filmmakers in my school so I dont have much to compare myself to

And when you say how it discourages you that the people in your selective school are not that talented, let that give you confidence that you have that much better of a chance to make it.

Monte - There is no possible way you could mask that attitude if that's how you really feel about them. My point? They are aware of how you feel about them and some of them probably react to you accordingly. I mean, look at all the venom you've spewed in this thread. How could they not know?

You've claimed to be super sweet, lovable Monte approaching them with a dose of apprehension. Yet, you've called them every name in the book and made all of us question your sanity in the process.

Again, I think they know what you think about them. Don't paint them all as ignorant with one broad stroke of the brush.
