I like this type of vibe

I'd like to comfortably be able to hand-hold a camera while still being able to use the EVF or the LCD; don;t be afraid to put those forward
That's the style that I like as well. Contemporary, while giving a nod to the classic look. Not to mention, very functional.
I drool over that Arri everytime I pick up an American Cinematographer.

Totaly TC!
Imagine a camera with some weight to it so we can do some real hand-held work.

Just the RAID system we need for recording (made even with CF cards or whatever) could fit in a film magazine and probably would give us the weight you´r talking about, John.
I´m in love with this design. You choose...wisely...

That's exactly what the idea behind the Kinetta (http://www.kinetta.com/photos/) is (was?).
Swapping out RAIDs like swapping out magazines.
I love that design as well John.
Hopefully we don't have to worry about RED coming out with yet another ENG style form factor.
I can't get away from that body style fast enough.

The Aaton A-Minima is a gorgeous piece of engineering. I almost bought one used for about $20K. True, 24fps, super-16 "filmlook."

I agree, the 235 kicks ace.
Would love to see a similar design.

I think in the spirit of the "Red" theme. Something styled after one of the Soviet era Konvas cameras might be tasty.

I most definitly will!!
...wanna buy me one?...i mean...i have no problems with that...i can reserve some space in my room for it.
Something seems so familiar about this design... I just can't put my finger on it. I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I look at it.

The Genesis uses a two-position CineAlta mag for on-board recording in addition to the uncompressed dual 4:4:4 HDSDI outputs. Cutting the tether would be at the very very top of my wishlist for RED.
Integrate at least two on-board mounting positions for the storage device - like the 99-wind-style mag on top or the coaxial on back - allowing for underslung mounting on a crane or for SteadiCam use. If the mags are "hot" - with data sent through the shoe - well, all the better.
If something like P2 was integrated instead, it would be great to have a block of four of them under the iris rods on the assistant side of the camera for hot-swapping.
Take a close look at how incredibly small Genesis really is (just cover the lens train with your left thumb) without the Primo lens on the front. It is so small in fact that it is equal by weight to the 35mm Millenium by weight (with 400' mag). That is the promise of single-chip imagers - 12.4k RGB non-Bayer in Genesis' case.
In my mind, we are really already where we need to be, less the solid-state on-board recording.
Now, if you can sell an actual base RED system for $25k or less... well, then you really have something.

good suggestions overlander.. I really like the idea of assistant side media swapping.. allows the 2nd or 1st AC to get in there without the Op moving away like mag changes.

I have always enjoyed an easy rapport with camera engineers, even though I've always communicated with them from an operator level. Maybe that's exactly why I have luck here - dunno...
I read and get the feeling that this is to be marketed strictly as a professional digital cinema tool - not a consumer-level or prosumer crossover device like the DVX100a.
If the RED team hasn't already, they should put down their engineering tools and all the preconceptions they may have about filmmaking and go spend some days on a fast-paced single camera film show.
On a show like CSI, you can see one or two cameras tackling twenty-plus locations in a week. There is no better place to ask and hear what operators are looking for - if they truly want for anything at all.
Panavision, for all it's warts, is the only company I've experienced that really does this. Tak and Dave K's office were always open to filmmakers who wanted to give input into camera design and functionality. While many producers cite business-side issues with Panavision, few operators I've worked with would choose another system before a Panaflex.
Actually, if RED doesn't already have relationships at Clairmont and Panavision, they should go meet with their engineers. When we tried to develop a 16mm VistaVision camera in the mid-90s, Panavision heard about us and simply opened their prototype "attic" to help us in our efforts. They had already produced a prototype they'd bashed together decades earlier. I'm sure they had patents on the thing, but the introduction to the device was anything but a "cease and desist" order. They indicated that they had developed the idea for television - thinking it could compete with video acquisition or 35mm multiple camera film.
Anyway, this RED concept is interesting, but I just wonder if the eventual market justifies the cost in really getting something all the way there.

My vote would be more in the Aaton Xtr prod style just so nice to hand hold. "like a cat on your shoulder"

I don't care about the formfactor, just as long as it's portable to some degree.
My problem is the recording media. Could desktop harddrives be converted into a slot loading device or working as something like a group of big P2 cards and be automatically RAIDed or something? I would imagine you'd have to format them with some RED-specific software before use but would that work? I'm thinking like two to four 500gb 16mb cache HDDs working together. Maybe some of those newer 100gb 8mb cache 7200RPM mobile hard drives could work instead? I don't know. There's got to be something even if it's got to be hooked up to a laptop with a RAID or something. There's many options, I know, but I guess I'll have to wait until NAB to see.
